THE PROPOSAL

MOHIT

Believe it or not I made up my mind to propose Rutt tonight. But I was not the only anxious one; Dinesh, who was trashed by now, also decided to follow my footsteps and propose Malvika. Blame it on alcohol but instead of telling him not to rush in, I encouraged him to go for it. Aman, who was the most sober out of us, tried to talk Dinesh out of it, but Dinesh looked determined to propose Malvika tonight. When we gained majority we pushed Aman to propose Alisha too. It was Dinesh's idea and I supported it. We gave him 'dosti ka waasta' and convinced him that 'teeno bhai saath me propose karenge'. He, finally, agreed after prolonged persuasion.

Aman got behind the wheels and we left for winning our love. It was not hard to locate the girls in the big city after their common friend tagged them on Facebook.

We were through half way when Aman started having second thoughts about the whole trip. "I don't think it is a good idea," Aman said, shaking his head.

"What do you mean?" I was surprised. He was the one who proposed that I should propose Rutt tonight at first place.

"I mean...us all going there....is not a good idea."

"Of course, it is a good idea!" Dinesh joined in.

"No. It's not. I have a bad feeling about it," Aman said.

"I told you he is going to back off. He is now looking for pretences." Dinesh said to me.

Aman had bought the ring to propose Alisha on her birthday. Neither had he proposed her that day nor did he tell us why he didn't propose her. I had a reason to believe he was the person who saw us kissing that day. It explained why he didn't want to propose Alisha that night and why he was not ready to propose her tonight.

"I am not making this shit up. I have this hunch. Moreover, they say teen tigaade kaam bigaade," Aman told us about the unlucky number 3.

"Are you out of your mind? " I slapped Aman on the back of his head.

"Ouch! What was that for?"

"I have to meet Rutt to propose her," said the drunken me.

Dinesh followed my lead and slapped him  too.

"And I have to propose Malvika," Dinesh added in slurred voice.

"Ouch!" He turned to Dinesh who was sitting on the back seat. "What the fuck do you think you are doing?"

"Woah... settle down. You are acting like a crazy person," Dinesh complained.

"ME?" Aman shouted in rage. "I am acting like a crazy person! Are you two freaking kidding me?"

"Listen to yourself. You are getting a little scary right now." I said out loud.

"Okay, you want to do this. We'll go propose them!" Aman said in a fit of anger.

"Thank you. Is that so hard?"

Aman stared at me in anger.

"Look at the road..." Dinesh let out a cautious shout.

Aman turned his head to the road as he muttered something under his breath.

****

"As far as I understand I am also proposing tonight. What I couldn't understand is why he gets the ring not me?" Dinesh popped the question.

"Are we really doing this?" Aman watched Dinesh from his rear-view mirror.

"This is not fair. Mohit has a clear advantage over us with the ring." Dinesh added.
