A/N: This is an extract from another one of my stories. I will post the full thing in another book.
9th Day of Stormwake, Age of Drifters,
I am sitting on a tree branch, staring down at the enormous Canthi swimming below me, their gold harnesses glinting in the sun, while I write this. I have just come from a flying lesson, one of the most important lessons young Drifters like myself need. It is my favourite lesson, aside from my Handling training. I love flying, feeling the air rushing beneath my wings. I have always been told I have beautiful wings, almost transparent, with rainbow highlights and edges. I tend to sparkle at sundown and sunup, though that sounds like a bad romance novel from the LandKiller era. For those who don't know, the LandKiller era consisted of a race of landlocked, territorial species who called themselves "human". (Such a strange word! Mind you, most of their words were strange. Try "McDonalds". Seriously, how do you even pronounce that???) They killed the land. They caused a GIGANTIC disaster, it completely levelled the planet. Even now, we have to clean up after them. And that is after many different eras. Those LandKillers were a poison to all. I'm glad that they're gone. However, I would have loved to meet one. The books all say that they were AMAZING inventors, even if they did destroy the planet creating. I wish I could invent something amazing. Oh, I should probably mention that I am a bit obsessed with studying LandKillers. They are SO interesting!!! Anyway, they caused a HUGE natural disaster and all of them perished. Then came the age of TreeDwellers. They were a race of LandKiller-like creatures that lived in the trees. They were there a few million years later, to help heal the planet. However, they lasted barely a million years as the poison from the LandKiller era was too strong, and they were wiped out. Then came the SeaSwimmers. Technically, they were already there during the end of the age of TreeDwellers, but they lasted longer. Not much, but long enough to heal the seas somewhat, making way for the next era, the era of Crawlers. The crawlers could live on both land and sea, and had a special immunity to the poisons made by LandKillers. They lasted 4 billion years, and then came the age of GhostGlows. These wraith-like creatures roamed the land, and further healed it. They lasted for another 10 billion years before we came along, the Drifters. We fly above the land and heal the air, land and sea of our beautiful planet. There was a different name for it in every era, but the only ones I know are that the LandKillers called it Earth (Enough of the weird names already!!), the SeaSwimmers called it Aquatheion, and we call it Dreylon. Whatever it is called, our planet is in danger. GRAVE danger. At least, that is what we are taught in school. But if that is true, why are we still here? Why is there life on the ground? Shouldn't we all be wiped out? Whatever the answer, it still needs healing. And that is why we are here.
Anyway, now that you, whoever is reading this, have had a brief history lesson, though you probably already know it all, I shall introduce myself. I apologise if I am a bit long-winded, I really LOVE history. My name is Lycrastias Slyvenoigan Hydormetrione, son of King Plediolas Mycrastias Hydormetrione. AKA Prince Lycra. Lycra is a LandKiller word as well, though I think it refers to some kind of clothing. Or maybe it was a kind of intoxicating drink? Who knows with LandKillers? Anyway, I am writing this in a fit of boredom. I don't know why I am writing a diary. It will probably outlast me. I doubt, however, it will last until the next era and its people, who are the only people this diary would be worth reading for. Maybe, if time-travel should ever be invented, I should be able to give this to the LandKillers, showing them their effect of their actions. I would be a hero... But there is no chance of time travel, not in this age. Strangely enough, in killing the planet, the LandKillers had the best technology, and were the smartest of all ages. We could all learn something from each other, I think. Even the brainiest Drifters would be humbled by even the stupidest of their brains, and the most land-loving LandKillers would be overawed by the commitment of even the most land-hating Drifter here. It is amazing how different we are, really. Simply amazing...
