You gripped your locker door tightly, trying to control your shaking hands. You had just realized your math homework was missing from your backpack. That meant a detention which meant staying after school with those students. Being the new student was bad enough, being at the new school less than two months and having no friends was worse. You told yourself over and over that being alone was fine, there was only 2 months remaining and then graduation. A lonely two months maybe but I knew you could make it, taking one day at a time.Moving from the U.S was really hard for you. Your family had moved to the U.S when you were five and you barely remembered the time before that. The U.S had always been your home, a place were all your friends were. It was really hard for you to adjust to Seoul, it was such a large city with new customs and cultures that you had to pick up fast. Fortunately your parents had always spoken korean at home and you were fluent. You tended to stick to korean but to amuse yourself you would occasionally change to english just to see others expressions, it was strangely empowering.
Getting away with not having your homework might have worked, except for the fact that the teacher Ms. Baek truly hated you. It might have had something to do with your math grade or the fact that you always fell asleep in that class, but you never felt the urge to ask.
You gripped your math book and notebook tightly in your arms, as you made your way down the hall towards room 4004. Other students brushed past you, running into the classroom, their backpacks bouncing up and down. You walked in only seconds before the bell rang. Glancing around you found only two seats available, but they were in the far back. You cursed under your breath. So much for paying attention today. You slide into one of the cold seats and set your things up. The teacher started talking in the background, something about midterms coming up. Your head ached at the thought of the massive tests that teachers were destined to give out. Grabbing the pencil you started doodling the sun and clouds in the corner of your page. You noticed a hand resting on the corner of your desk. You glanced up to see Ms. Baek staring down at you with her cold, uninviting gaze.
"I'm glad you could join us today, Kim Minha." She was wearing a formal black skirt, her golden name tag pinned to her white blouse. She wasn't any taller than you in heels but when you were sitting down she was able to loom over you in a rather scary way.
You noticed the stack of papers in her hands. Realizing she was collecting the homework you looked down unable to met her eyes, "I left my homework at home, sorry..."
She made a disappointing sound with her mouth. Glancing up you saw her shaking her head. "Looks like I'll be informing Mr. Song about your addition to the detention list." She wrote something in her grade book and moved on to the next student. You could feel the eyes of the students. Laying your head on your hands you wished you could just disappear. Across the room the door opened with a loud click. To your relief the staring eyes left you, turning their attention to the front. Unable to resist you glanced to the front of the room, wondering who dared to arrive so late. Class was halfway over and at that point most students would rather skip than face Ms. Baek and her wrath.
A boy stood in the doorway, his black bag slung over his shoulder. He looked around the class with an amusing smirk. It was Jin, the school trouble maker. He was standing there his white oxford untucked the top buttons undone, revealing another shirt underneath. What was suppose to be a school jacket had the added flare of a golden chain and custom pockets. His tie was nonexistent, instead a golden necklace lay around his neck. His shoes were bright red nikes, and his light brown hair styled to perfection. Without a word of greeting he just stood there with his hands in his pocket, his golden watch glimmering from under his jacket sleeve.
"Ahh, Kim Seokjin, glad you could join us," she exclaimed with a fake smile, "According to attendance you've skipped all your morning class today? I expect to see you in detention this afternoon, unless you have an appropriate excuse." She put a lot of emphasis on the word appropriate, for real reasons. Jin had come to school late saying he was kidnapped by foreign spies. Last time he told the teacher that he had to meet the president of Korea, and that it would have been rude not to have at least said hello. His list of excuses was extensive and were quite amusing to hear. Most teachers have given up on scolding Jin, many have stopped punishing since it didn't seem to be effective. You had noticed that teachers have gone as far as to ignore him altogether.
