Undyne walked in as soon as we'd finished talking, so instead of leaving to investigate Grillby's immediately, Alphys explained to her what was going on.
"It's so good to see you Frisk!" Undyne gave me a quick hug that practically crushed me, "I wish you'd come around more."
"I'm sorry. To all of you, I should have visited," My voice is a sigh.
Sans smiled meekly and looked down, Papyrus gave me a genuine smile, and Undyne and Alphys shook their heads, also grinning.
"We forgive you, we always will. We're friends Frisk," Alphys said.
Sans came up to me and rubbed my arm reassuringly, "Are ya ready detective Frisk?"
I nodded and we were off. The only one of us who didn't was Alphys, she wanted to do more research on Goodridge's experiments.
-----
Grillby's was quiet, oddly so at this time of day. Lunch and dinner were the busiest usually. When approached he told us about how business had been slow all day, he blamed Goodridge's murder. There wasn't much to go on, the body had turned to dust shortly after, the scientist's soul long gone. After looking around for a while we decided to split up, Undyne and Papyrus were going to search around the area for signs of anything unusual, Sans and I were going to search Goodridge's house.
"Are you sure you want to go there alone?" Undyne asked us, "I could protect you."
"I think we can handle it," I said warmly, glancing at Sans.
-----
The house wasn't old but didn't look very well taken care of, "Man this place is a wreck," I said aloud.
"Yeah I know," Sans replied clearly distracted.
We walked up the steps and into the house. It was dark and the floor boards creaked as we went in the front door.
"It smells like... like old books kind of?" I said to myself.
"It does," Sans responded. I looked over at him in surprise, I couldn't believe he heard me, "The lab is in the basement I think,"
"I can't see a thing," I sighed, feeling around the entry hall. As soon as the world left my mouth a blue light cast a glow around the room. I whipped around in fear, but soon realized it was just Sans, a blue flame danced across his fingertips.
"Better?" He laughed.
"T-Thank you."
We kept walking through the ginormous house, making our way through the rooms, scanning for clues. I turned to Sans, ready to ask if he had seen anything worthwhile, when suddenly I heard a creak upstairs. My eyes widened, my hair stood on end. Sans made his way to my side quickly.
"What was that...?" I whispered, fear clinging to my words, anxiety crawling in my skin.
"I don't know..." He trailed off, looking around the room.
My cellphone buzzed, it was Alphys, "Hello?" I whispered.
"Hello...I... I've learned somethings. Firstly, Ferfus uses individual's fears to torment and kill them, to gain their souls. I hope you're being careful; it could be anywhere. Secondly, it's a shape shifter. It can morph into anything. God Frisk it's so much worse than I thought. Please, stay safe. Oh and I almost forgot. From what Goodridge had observed, Ferfus was only willing to strike if someone was alone so... stick with someone."
I swallowed hard, "I have to go Alphys."
"Let me know if you need anything else," She said and hung up.
I quickly told Sans what she said, "Don't worry I won't leave you. We'll be fine," He reassured me.
I could hear move creaking, a quick yet familiar pitter patter, like small feet... children's feet. I looked around the room, terrified.
"Should we, should we leave?" I asked him, beginning to back away slowly.
I jumped, the sound of something being drug filled the air.
Sans staying in front of me, backing up with me watching the doorways that led off the hallway.
"Not today... Ness," A voice hissed. Sans looked around in surprise, eyes wide. Suddenly he was thrown across the hall and into a room. The door slammed shut, I screamed.
"Frisky Frisk, always so weak..." A knife glinted in the dark, all the way down the hall, it was low, whoever was holding it was short. The voice was so familiar.
"What is your biggest fear, Frisk?" I was trembling, moving backwards, feeling so panicky it was hard to breathe, "Is it having no one? Being alone?" She paused and laughed in a low tone, "No Frisk, you're afraid of yourself aren't you?" Her smile shone through the dark. I began backing up, "Don't go Frisk, don't leave me alone," The voice was a small child's, a female. Its eyes glinted red and as it passed through a ray of light breaking through a dirty window I realized, it was Chara.
"No, please!" I said turning to run. I dashed down the hall, my heart beating out of my chest. The front door locked, and then she was in front of me. I stumbled backwards trying to get away.
Chara growled at me, and flung me to the ground, "I always wished you'd helped me Frisk but you knew you were too weak, didn't you?" She stabbed at me, I rolled out from under her. I tried to run again but she threw me down, I slid a few feet. Before I could move I felt a cold, sharp pain; Chara's knife dug into my shoulder, right next to my collar bone. I cried out in agony, hot blood rushed from the wound at a pace quick enough to make me feel dizzy.
"Chara please... Don't hurt me," I begged like a child. I pushed away, she fell back, disappearing. I stumbled to the side, leaning against the wall for support.
I could hear all the screams again; my nightmares were coming to life around me.
Chara appeared again, a few feet away, down the hall, "Remember when we killed mommy? We stabbed her over and over and over. Or Sans? We had to fight him dirty. We struck him down like a dog!" I could see it all, everyone falling, collapsing, dying. I couldn't breathe, and my chest was squeezing so hard, "Just give up Frisk... you know you're weak, your body is MINE."
She ran at me again, swinging the knife wildly, I dodged by sliding to the left, just barely getting away.
"No..." My eyes opened wide and I stared at the back of her head, "You're wrong. I love them. You'll never have the determination I do."
Chara turned back and looked ready to strike. Then suddenly Sans appeared in front of me.
"Knocking me out? Seriously? You thought that'd stop me? You can do better than that... Ferfus," Sans was heaving, his fire magic danced around him, his eye was glowing blue, his body ridged and tense.
Suddenly the pain in my shoulder hit me and I grabbed the wound with my hand, the pain made me cry out again. Sans looked at me with concern for a split second, and in that second Ferfus was gone. He instantly ran to me, supporting my weight so I wasn't sliding down the wall.
"Frisk, your arm," He pulled my hand from the wound and looked at it, my legs began to shake, "Frisk, stay with me hold on."
I felt myself moving forward. The pain was so intense; my heart was beating rapidly. I was so dizzy, the room was spinning and the air was rushing by me and then something is grabbing me and it hurts so much.
"P-pleas..e... h-he-e..l.p.." I think I said it out loud before everything faded to black.
