Lab Rat - A Short Story
Fantasy

I still remember that day as if it were yesterday. I remember waking up to the fierce smell of smoke around me. I remember the intense heat as it engulfed the wooden floor boards, lapping up the pieces like a dog does when it's thirsty.

But most of all, I remember being able to walk through the flames as if I was just strolling through a field of grass. It was like my skin welcomed the burning embers, letting them infiltrate my body as it I needed it to survive.

I lost everything that night. I lost my family, my house, my freedom. But I also gained something. I gained this inhumane ability to survive even the deadliest of temperatures.

But like I said, it came with a cost. Now I'm a test subject in some lab in the middle of nowhere.

The day I walked out of the burning building, clothes engulfed in flames, hair changing from deep brown to bright orange before my eyes, and perfectly smooth skin, I was suddenly the most interesting and dangerous person on the earth.

Forget those mass murders. Forget those people walking around with a bomb in their bag. It's time to make way for Mya Daniels, the soon to be most dangerous asset to humans all because of her alien-like ability to walk through fire and come out unscathed at the other end.

I know. It's stupid but it's how it is.

But they're going to get the shock of their lives when they find out that I'm not dangerous. You would think that, considering they have done about one million and three tests on me, they would know I'm not dangerous. Hate to break it to you but that assumption is incorrect.

They actually think I'm more dangerous then before all because they can't find anything.

It has been three months and they still believe I am a threat to humanity, all because I survive being set on fire. Strange.

"Mya."

My head flicks up to the only door in the room, shocked to see three people I have never seen before. I've seen many people while being locked in this cell, but never these three faces.

"Who are you?" I ask, my body going into alert mode.

"We came to rescue you."

Rescue me. Why would they be here to rescue me? Everyone wants me locked away as a lab rat, so the fact that someone is here to get me out is very fascinating.

"Why would you want to get me out?"

"Because," the guy at the front says, "We're just like you."

"And what am I exactly? Some alien!" I spit.

"No. You're a Jvaala."
