My mother was carrying me in her arms with a worried look in her eyes. She was headed toward the woods, and I was unaware of what was happening. She kept looking behind her, tears falling down her face. I heard sirens in the distance, red and blue lights flashing in different directions. It was very cold and pitch black. I could hear the soft sound of the snow under my mother’s footsteps. The sounds of sirens started to fade and my mother’s fast pace had slowed down to a stop.
“I will see you again sweetheart.” She hoped, as a tear ran down her red cheek. She was breathing heavily, and was very pale. “I love you Kai.” She placed me down next to a big oak tree. She kissed my forehead, and took off in another direction. I was still confused, only at the age of 2 not knowing what was happening. I was cold and lonely. “Mama?” I whispered. But I didn’t dare to get up. I stayed put. What was going on? I thought
I lay there for several hours, trying to open my eyes that had been shut from the cold ice. I was not a crier. I was a quiet child. I was still wrapped tightly in my blanket when something came and picked me up. I couldn't feel the warmth of someone's arms. No, it was more like I was being lifted without it touching underneath me.
I could open my eyes easily now. It was now warm and comforting. I sat up and looked around. I was leaning against something soft and snug, like fur. It looked as if I was underground. It was solid soil but had a warm and welcoming look to it.
I turned my head around and was startled. There was a wolf in this underground cave like thing. It was big and grey. It was the biggest wolf I've ever seen. I've never seen a wolf face to face before but this certainly was a wolf bigger than the average. I looked slightly upward and saw an opening. I heard the wolf take a breath of air and then he opened his eyes.
I backed up to the opposite wall of the clammy cave and sat watching this wolf’s every move. He stood up and stretched out; he yawned then looked towards me. He walked over to where I was now sitting. I twisted my head away. I was food and I knew it. He placed his nose upon my cheek and sniffed, taking in my scent. I just stayed still.
He licked my cheek. I turned to him, now meeting his face once again. I suddenly felt very safe. He had a gorgeous shade of Blue in his eyes. I took my hand and slowly placed it on the side of his head and stroked his fur. He laid back down right in front of me while I pet him.
After 5 minutes of peace, which I haven't had in a little while, the wolf picked me up by the back of my shirt and carried me out of the cave. It was light now. The snow glistened from the hot sun beams that warmed my skin. Trees were all around me, not a single sound was made except for the wolf’s footsteps. Where is this wolf taking me? I wondered.
Everything was so beautiful compared to the night before. I didn’t understand why my mother had abandoned me out here. I started to feel a bit guilty, thinking that I had done something wrong or that I wasn’t a good child. I just tried to push all the thoughts aside, but they kept flooding through my head. A child at the age of 2 shouldn’t feel this pain. Suddenly, something had finally distracted me from the gloomy thoughts.
Still in the wolf’s grasp, I touched the cold, soft snow with my fingers, then shot then back up from the freezing sting it gave me. We reached a hill that had little snow on it. The wolf set me down and left. My heart sank; I didn't want to be abandon once again.
I started to worry but a moment later he was back in sight. He gently held wild berries in his mouth and once he approached me, he set them down on my lap. I looked up and patted his head softly and whispered “Thank you” quietly to him. I looked down at the berries. They looked just like the ones my mother used to give me for a snack. I missed her, I missed her so much.

I am Kai, now at the age of 10. Grayson saved my life and took me in his own. Without him I wouldn’t have survived. He taught me the way of the woods. I knew how he thought. I was, in a way, like him now. He was a big part of my life.
I still remember what had happened. A thought that would always cross my mind at random times. “Will I ever see my mother again?” I always wondered.
I didn’t know what could possibly happen, but I am just glad I have Grayson. My Best friend. My Wolf. My Protector.
