It was the woods that was their sanctuary. On August 15th, 1968, a teenaged girl by the name of Skyye Turner was magnetically and subconsciously drawn to the deep wooded area known as Lennonwood to all the locals. It was a bond forming before they even existed as one. Fate works as a gas pedal to fast track the events that are simply meant to be.
She sat on her bed twirling her hair and her dad banged and boomed in the kitchen with his intent on fixing the sink. Getting out of the house was a priority and that was all she knew she had to do. A strong scent of freshly mown grass drifted through her cracked window like a magic fog. As Skyye embraced the scent she decided to go for a walk and read her favorite book somewhere in the beautiful graces of nature.
Her father was lying on his back below the sink bellowing out obscenities while her mother calmly watched above.
"I'm going to head out for a little bit, I need some fresh air." Skyye said with an ease in her voice despite the foul language being spewed below.
"Okay Hun, please be safe." Her mom said with a "Yeah I would too" expression on her face. Skyye gave a flick wave goodbye and headed out the front door into the afternoon sun. The day was fresh and neighbors all around seemed to be enjoying the weather also. Mr. Philips mowed the grass next door and offered a heavy wave to Skyye. She waved back and got to walking down the street, her book tightened in her grip at it swung at her sides.
Jesse Miller sat on the side of Ted's Diner after finishing a nice hamburger he had the privilege of purchasing himself. He had gotten a job doing yard work along the Mexicans for farmer Morris. Sure he was a mean old prick, but Jesse needed the money and was in no position to turn it down. At the age of seventeen, responsibilities became overwhelming and crippling at times. But as his father always said, that's life.
Jesse lived with his mother on Whitemore Street outside of town. His father died when he was twelve in an automobile accident and since then, his mom and him seemed to be on a rough road to redemption. His mother Laura worked at the pharmacy in town and barely made enough for them to get by. It was these times Jesse was thankful for being an only child, as his mother probably did too. Jesse stood up and made way through a crowd of kids screaming about which super hero could kill who. Jesse smiled, it seemed like it was going to be a good day.
Skyye hummed to herself as she got to the long grass at the edge of Lennonwood. The crunch of the fresh grass was somehow relaxing and riveting at the same time. Her smile grew wider as the sun shined her features beautifully. The day was humid with a slight icy breeze to occasionally relieve the heat.
She walked to a tree that had a bright red blanket underneath it, it was like it was meant for her to use. She decided to sit down and start reading her book for a while. She loved to read and get away from the world. It was her escape from everyday pressures of life; and there were many of them for Skyye.
Her father was not always the nicest man in town, especially when he drank. The little fiasco in the kitchen was just a little icing on the cake of misery. His abusiveness came to a temporary halt and one night he wen entirely too far, slapping Skyye and her mother for leaving the whole day and not informing him about their whereabouts. Skyye's mother promised that she would leave him if anything like that was ever to happen again. He agreed and got on the sobriety wagon for a good six months before deciding he was too weak to stay sober in this life. Though he still drank frequently, his temper against Skyye and her mother diminished to almost nothing. But this also left his temper raging more extreme on other things to replace and make up for the extra rage he had bottled up for his family.
Skyye thought about this as she read her book about an orphan girl going through a number of abusive homes. In a way, Skyye could very much relate to the character. It brought her a sort of peace of mind, it was one of her favorite books. Little did she know that on this day, something was about to change. She was about to learn more about herself than she ever thought possible. The wind picked up, lifting the corners of the pages in her book as she read comfortably. Jesse was now on his way to see her, although he doesn't even realize her existence on this earth yet. Fate sometimes plays out like a game of chess. It takes just the right moves in order to get the correct outcome it was always meant to have. A flock of birds scattered in the tree above her, singing as they went on to their days next adventures.
Skyye felt a feeling of contentment swarm her nerves, someone or something was nearby. She looked up to see a boy around her age glaring at her through the sun. He was tall from what she could make out, and something about this boy sent her heart racing at first sight. Through the glaring rays of sun, she could make out a smile on his face. She smiled back and stood up, the wind picked up once more and sent her dress flowing around her.
They walked to each other, already knowing what to say and how to feel as if they had known one another their whole lives. Jesse could see her sparking green eyes fix on his as she began to walk over. He was usually very nervous around girls but an easy calm embraced him with this one. It had all been meant to be.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." Jesse said with a glowing smirk. She was smiling back, he was very handsome and her passion for him was almost instant.
"You didn't, not really doing much but reading anyway." Skyye said with her eyes still fixed to his.
You could say that this was when it all began for Jesse and Skyye. An adventure bigger than anything possible to this world's limits. The connection started immediately, slowly putting each other's minds at ease.
Jesse held his hand out to Skyye as her auburn hair flowed over her face. She tucked her hair behind her ear looking at Jesse's held out hand, and accepted with hers. They walked hand in hand to the tree with the blanket.
