It is a cold winter day. Emily and her mom are outside. It is snowing.
But Emily and her mom are not cold. That's because they are busy. They are making a snowman.
"He needs a nose," Emily says.
"Here," Mom says. Mom hands Emily a carrot. "Use this."
Emily sticks the carrot in the snowman's face. He instantly looks real. "That's great!" Emily says.
"Here," Mom says, handing Emily a blue scarf. "This will keep him warm."
Emily puts the scarf around the snowman. "He looks happy!" Emily says.
"He sure does," Mom says. "But he's still missing something."
"Yes," says Mom. "He is isn't he?"
"I know!" says Emily. "He needs arms!"
"Ahh! You are right!" Mom says.
Emily looks around. She runs off. She comes back with two long twigs. She sticks one into each side of the snowman. She steps back and looks at him. She smiles.
"Wonderful," says Mom. "He looks magnificent. Good job, Emily."
"Thanks. But he's still missing something."
"A hat?"
"Hmm. No, he doesn't need a hat. He needs something else," Emily says.
Mom and Emily look at the snowman. The cold wind blows. Emily shivers.
"Well. I think he looks beautiful," Mom says. "Come on. Let's go inside. It's getting cold."
Emily and her mom go inside. Mom makes Emily some hot cocoa. Emily drinks it by the fire. All of a sudden, she jumps up. "I know!" she says. She puts on her jacket and runs outside. Mom watches her from the window.
After a while, Mom goes outside. "Emily," she says, "It's time to come inside." Then she sees what Emily has made.
"Now he's perfect," Emily says proudly. "Now he has a friend."
Instead of one, there are now two snowmen. They stand side by side.
"Great!" Mom says. "Now all he needs is a scarf!"
