The day of the party arrived and too soon in my opinion. Normally I would wear a cute dress to a party, but today I really couldn't be bothered. I was just pulling on my jeans when Dad called up.

"Ella, we're all heading over, just come around when you're ready."

"Okay."

That meant I had time to at least tame my troublesome hair and apply a light coat of make up.

As I plaited my hair to the side, I went downstairs to look out the window.

The atmosphere looked nice. Fairy lights, food, wine, beer, cheesy 80's music and middle aged couples having a laugh. I did debate staying in but I thought I should at least check it out properly, I didn't want to appear snobby.

I reluctantly locked the door and headed over.

When I approached the Styles' I was regretting it instantly. Ninety five percent of the party were either people the same age as my parents or young children. I suppose all the other teens had better things to do on the last Saturday before school started.

All I wanted to do now was find Mum. That wasn't hard though, find where the wine is situated, she's there.

She was talking to rather pretty looking woman.

"Ah Ella, what took you so long!" She giggled, clearly the wine already having some effect on her.

"This is Anne!" She gestured towards her pretty new friend.

"It's lovely to meet you Ella, help yourself to a soft drink in the kitchen."

I smiled and nodded politely. I was hoping something stronger would be on offer in order for me to survive this night, but for now a coke would suffice.

I poured some into a plastic cup and headed into the back garden. The atmosphere was happy and fairly relaxed. I found an old chair on the patio and seated myself there. A man who I presumed was Robin was cooking some sausages and burgers on the BBQ. He called out to an attractive, curly haired boy, around my sort of age to get him some paper towels from the kitchen.

I zoned out for a bit only focusing on this boy, he was extremely good looking. He passed me on his way to the kitchen and smiled. I almost melted, his crooked grin was perfection.

He returned seconds later with the paper towels and passed me again this time with a cheeky wink. This guy certainly had no trouble with girls. He returned to his previous spot with a couple of mates. I noticed that he was no longer listening to the conversation around him. He was looking at me.
