Precious marvel of the modern age
sleek, small, black as my cat.
Making information available
at the drop of a hat,
just not wisdom
or knowledge
Now we send emails
and texts, update a status,
browse the net looking
for that obscure line
that one guy said
in that movie
that one time.
The first to greet me
every morning with a song,
or a buzz, or a buzz, or (– Fuck!
How do I you turn off?)
And the last I see
before I sleep
(more fun than
counting sheep)
Though smudged, I've kept
intact your glassy surface
with nary a scratch, but
I'm sorry I dropped you
from the couch,
in the car,
on the street,
or down the stairs.
Goodness knows others' screens
have shattered! Thank the heavens
for those little plastic
screen protectors,
but the good ones
that cost nearly
twenty bucks.
Many a person has called out
"crap" at a sent but misspelled
text and I am just as guilty
of calling that out too.
But that's because
it's all your fine
[*Fault. Damn you auto correct!]
Stupid smartphone of mine,
I will love and keep you
because you are perfect.
Well ... at least
until the shiny
new model comes out
and goes on sale.
A/N: This particular gem was written for a creative writing course I took a few years ago. The exercise was to write a poem about something you see and use every day. I thought it was apropos to start with this one on Wattpad as my phone is where I read it on most often.
