**Merlin's POV**

King Arthur's sword flashed in the sunlight as it clashed against Y/N's. Though she was young, short, and obviously a female, she was quick on her feet and skilled with a blade. She and Arthur had been sparring often, Y/N wanting to hone her abilities. The rest of the knights watched from the sidelines, cheering the fighters on. Suddenly, Arthur got the tip of his blade under Y/N's hilt, and flipped her weapon out of her grip, sending it flying. She cursed, and Arthur laughed. He shook her hand, saying,

"Maybe next time, Y/N." Then swaggered off. Gwaine sniggered at her as she stormed over to the other knights.

"Watch it, cocky, I may not be able to beat Arthur, but I can sure as hell beat you." She growled at the older man. He raised an eyebrow, chuckling at the angst-y teenager.

"Oh really? Would you care to prove that?" He asked her, not expecting her to say yes.

"Of course." Y/N said hotly, straightening. Percivale shoved the two of them into the ring, and Elliot started chanting,
"Y/N, Y/N!" The other knights joined in, cheering on one or the other of the combatants, as they took their stances. Y/N was already heated from her spar with Arthur, whereas Gwaine was rested and cool, but Y/N had her aggravation on her side. She spun, swinging her first strike at Gwaine's arm, but he brought his own blade up to stop her's. They met with an impressive noise, and the shorter fighter quickly resumed her stance, her red face set in a determined expression. Without giving Gwaine or herself time to recover from her first attack, she commenced a second one, aimed at his thigh, and this time he was too slow to stop it. The dulled blade hit its mark, causing Gwaine to fall onto the dirt. Triumph glowed on the young woman's face as she pointed her sword at his undefended chest. He grinned, holding up his hands in surrender.
"Good job, Y/N." She nodded thanks, then helped him up. I sighed, watching her get punches on the shoulder from the other knights. She had been a knight for about six months now, and I was proud to see how she had improved. Arthur grinned at her, and shook her hand proudly. It had taken a lot of convincing and a little life saving to get Y/N into the knights, and though she was easily frustrated, she used that to push herself harder each time she was defeated. I was worried, though, because there was to be a tournament in Camelot soon, and I knew that Y/N was going to try to enter. No matter how good she was, she was still only a young girl, and she didn't stand a chance against trained knights using real weapons. She pulled off her helmet, letting her long (if your hair isn't long, sorry, it's important for later) H/C hair tumble out, grinning at me as she exited the practice ring, and I smiled back. Y/N was practically my little sister; I had met her over a year ago when she had saved me and almost an entire druid camp single handedly from a group of outlaw magicians, and in return, I granted her dream, making her a knight.
"Hey, Merlin." she said, giving me a heavy metal hug (hehe see what I did there).
"Oof! Hi!" I greeted her, then she plopped her helmet into my arms.
"Do be a love and clean my armor for me, will you?" she asked, employing her puppy eyes. I raised my eyebrows. She never asked me to do things for her.
"I-" she laughed, cutting me off.
"I'm just kidding, you goof." she said, snatching the helmet back and jogging past me towards the armory. I shrugged, slightly confused. Then I saw Arthur walking towards me, and I knew the next armor cleaning I would be told to do would NOT be joke.

**THE NEXT DAY** (3rd person POV)
Y/N yawned and sat up. Morning light was filtering through her window and shining into her E/C eyes. She flopped back onto her pillow as she heard her door opening and B/F/N walking in. B/F/N was Y/N's servant, but they were really just friends. B/F/N had a thing for Merlin, and Y/N loved to tease her about it. Her maid walked up to the semi-curtained window and through the curtains wide open, letting in the blazing light.
"Good morning, Y/N!" she sang cheerfully as she pulled back her friend's covers. Y/N, who was very sore and sleepy, was not amused. She swatted at B/F/N and groaned, turning over. "Get up!" the servant persisted. Y/N sat up and glared at her.
"Fine." she growled. "I'm awake." B/F/N smiled.
"Good!" she said, waltzing over the the large carved wardrobe to get out the lady knight's clothes.
"You're awful cheerful this morning." Y/N grumbled, climbing out of her tangled sheets. B/F/N didn't respond, but only continued doing her task. "Want to share why, or will I have to guess?" She persisted. B/F/N turned, Y/N's clothes in hand.
"If you MUST know, I got some flowers this morning. She said as Y/N walked behind the screen to dress.
"From who?" She asked sceptically, looking over the top of the screen at the older girl. B/F/N didn't meet her eyes.
"I'm not sure..." she said cautiously, and her friend laughed.
"Sure. Whatever you say." She teased, and, to her satisfaction, saw a blush creep into the servant's cheeks. Y/N came out from behind the screen wearing a white cotton shirt and deep grey pants tucked into tall boots. The shirt was a little tight fitting, with a black chord lacing up the back, and a slimming red outer courset, and unbeknownst to her, it made Y/N look really pretty. "I don't have any training today; Arthur and Gwen are going on a hunting trip, so no need for armor. All though, I do beleive Merlin is going, and I'm sure he'll need help." She said with a small grin as she sat on the bed so B/F/N could braid her hair. When she was finished, Y/N turned to hug her companion. "Better hurry before they leave without you." She commented kindly, and the older girl nodded and ran off.
