"Ughhhh, I can't get it right. " I said as I lay upon the ground. "Swords just isn't my thing."

My brother, Lance, helped me up and said, " Oh, don't be that way. You have great potential. You just need to to practice, that's all."

"Oh, quit being so positive. I suck and you know it." I replied. "Well, you do suck, just not at swords." he said, his eyes gleaming with laughter and his shoulders shaking from trying to hold it in.

I stuck my tongue out at him, and tried unsuccessfully to keep the smile off my face. "Oh hush you. You're just jealous."

"Of what, the fact that you, an eighteen year old girl, haven't even seen the world yet? Yep, sure do envy you. I can just feel the need to have your antisocial behavior." He replied.

I narrowed my eyes at him, and didn't reply, partly because what he said is true and partly because I didn't have anything to say. We lived in a cottage in the woods, and while we attended a high school just beyond the treeline, I didn't have any friends, and I didn't talk to anyone other than to pay thanks to a grocery worker for ringing up my items.

I picked up my sword and hoodie, and slipped the jacket over my head, flipped my hood up, slide my sword back into its sheath and walked back inside. It was still early morning, and today I had to come back from winter break. My family came from a long line of element wielders, but ever since my grandmother married a human, none of us had any powers.

The only thing we did have was any ability to be unaffected by any temperature; that meant no burns, frostbite or even chill bumps. Haven't sweat once in my life.

"Liara, it's time to get ready! Stop bickering with your brother and get your ass ready for school!" my mother yelled from her room. My brother then yelled as he came in "What ass?"

"Oh, haha, very funny. Quit commenting on the size of my ass and help me pick an outfit you oversized doofus." I yelled back down. Lance trudged up the stairs, and made sure to go extra slow to piss me off. "Lance, just hurry up. I don't care if we're late, but I know you do." I taunted. His eyes lit up with realization, and he ran up the rest of the stairs, almost tripping several times.

"Well, what are you waiting for??! Let's get ready for school!" He shouted as he ran to our room. "Nerd" I snickered.

"I HEARD THAT!" he yelled. I walked to my room and opened my closet, trying to find something that will make others assume that we also had to stay warm. You see, no one was allowed to know about us. If they did, the shades would find us and we would be locked in a dungeon to be put into interrogation, so that we would spill our secrets. And if that didn't work....well, you could say we would be pretty much useless at that point.

I decided on jeans and a pale blue sweater, slid on my riding boots, and slipped out  the door. I jumped onto my horse, hoofy- yes I know, very original- and tied my brown and blonde streaked hair into a ponytail, riding off to my first day back in hell from my break.
