Chapter One
What a day to wear pants. Thirty degrees, and I wear pants. The weather said it was supposed to rain today. So I brought a raincoat, an umbrella, and I wore pants.
Standing outside in the blistering heat, I watched hordes of high school students shuffling through the front doors of school. I guess I probably move soon, before the soles of my shoes melt and stick to the sidewalk.
My name is Jenny, i would say my last name, but it would probably be too hard to pronounce. I go to a small school, in a small town, so you probably wouldn't remember it if you drove through it looking for a coffee shop or something. I'm not one of the most popular kids in school, I may not have the newest clothes or the most expensive shoes or whatever, but I manage.
On the opposite end of the populararity spectrum is my best friend Kendall. She is one of the people who you would see waltzing down the hall in high heels and mini skirts. The last time I went over to her house, going into her room I got lost in a flurry of pink and feather boas. People wonder why we're friends, but since she's one of the popular kids, bnobody questions her choices in friends and whoever she chooses to hang out with.
Walking into the front of the school, I see Kendall and the rest of her pink-clad friends crowded around the bulletin board neaqr the front of the main office. I craned my neck to try and see what the poster was that they were gawking at. They turned around and bounced down the hall, leaving Kendall to read the bottom of the poster. I walked up to her and looked at what she was reading.
The poster was for the latest dance. There was nio question that I wasn't attending. The last time I'd ever danced was when I was five at a wedding with my aunt, I can hardly remember it and yet i still know that it was a horrible experience. Kendall turned away from the poster and looked at me, a huge grin plastered across her face.
"So? Will you think about it?" She said.
"What? The dance? You, You're joking, right? I never dance, you know that." I responded.
"well, yeah. What else would could I possibily have been talking about?" Kendall said, "It wouldn't be that bad, I could help you find a dress and everything. It'll be fun. Please?"
"No." I said, but Kendall's face became even more pleading and I caved, "Well, maybe. If I find a dress that I actually like." Good luck with that, I hadn't worn a dress since the first day of school.
"Great! Come on! We'll go to the mall after school, I saw the cutest dresses in a few stores there. But we got to go, or else we'll be late for class." Kendall said, practically bouncing with glee.
I let her drag me down the hall towards our lockers as the first bell rang over our heads. all the while with a question flying around in my head . . . What had I just gotten myself into?
Chapter Two
The day passed in a blur. Before I knew it, the final bell was ringing and I was out the door, hoping that I could somehow get away from Kendall, and sneak to the bus stop without her seeing me. My plan dissolved the moment I stepped out the front doors and saw Kendall standing by one of the cement pillars at the top of the stairs.
"Hey Jenny, are you ready to go dress shopping?" She asked, eager as ever.
" Sure, whatever. It's not like I have much of a coice now." I said reluctantly as she pulled me towards the parking lot.
"Of course, you did promise. Now come on! We have to hurry, the mall's not open that late." Kendall replied.
The mall was a wonderland. A sparkly, blindingly white wonderland. It was as if I had leped headfirst into a huge snowbank in winter. Except for the fact thatit was littered with clothes, purses, and shoes. I don't think i'd ever actually been shoppingin a mall, most of my clothes are leftovers from the closets of my sisters. Whatever clothes were considered to be out of style or classified under the catagory of clothes that they couldn't be seen in would get tossed in a box and dragged into my room, just waiting to be unpacked and crammed into my closet.
