CHAPTER 6-STRANGER AND STRANGER
“Wait, what did you say happened?” I rolled my eyes. This was the fifth time Lily had asked that question.
“He asked me out on a date,” I said slowly and sighed, irritated. Avery smacked her hand against her forehead. The upper half of her body was leaning off the side of my bed leaving her to view the world upside down. Her bangs were no longer hiding her black eyes that were lined with thick black liner and her face was bright red from the blood rushing to her head. Dean was sprawled out awkwardly on my small sofa, his head facing the ceiling. He kept throwing my stuffed animal up and down, quietly humming a theme song to an old TV show. The three of us were equally annoyed with Lily.
“When I suggested you get closure I didn’t know that Meathead would ask you out on a date. I accept full responsibility,” I rolled my eyes. Typical Lily.
“Don’t you think it’s a little odd,” Avery drawled out, finally speaking up and sitting up at the same time, “I mean you save the dork in distress in freshman year and then he ignores you for a full year. And now suddenly or not so suddenly he asks you out on a date right after his minion swore his vengeance on you. What if this is all just a hoax?”
My heart sunk into my stomach. What if Avery was right and that this was part of Chris’ revenge? I didn’t want to believe it. Everyone deserved at least one chance especially Dallas Ryker. I had waited so long for this. I couldn’t just throw it away just because of a theory.
“You don’t have any proof,” I stated, swallowing all doubt I had felt about Dallas’ proposal to a date, “You said so yourself ‘What if?’”
Dean caught the teddy bear and threw it onto the chest that sat at the edge of my bed next to the other stuffed animals in my large collection and turned his head to look at me, “Avery had a point. It is a little suspicious, Max.”
“I admit that Dallas’ friends are jerks and that I think that he’s a total meathead, but I think for Max’s sake we should give him the benefit of the doubt,” Lily stated, backing me up.
“It’s bad enough you had me sit there and do nothing while Blake tore you apart in front of half the school. I’m not going to keep standing inactively on the sidelines because of some stupid fantasy you have for a stupid boy. It’s my job as a best friend to make sure that no one hurts you and if someone does hurt you, I hurt them. With that said, I don’t think you should go on this date and I’m not changing my mind.”
“I don’t need your permission,” I growled, anger flailing within me. Why couldn’t she just be happy for me. All she ever did was brood, act aloof, and just be angry at the world like she was a victim of some sort.
