sammy's pov

"today, class, we will be using morse code. look at the first piece of paper you collected when you walked in, this is your decoder. just draw the dashes and lines below the letter you want to use on this sheet of paper," my social studies teacher told us as she passed out the plain pieces of paper, "and i will pass them out and you can all decode them after."

i thought for a minute before putting down  . ...- . -. / -- .. .-. .- -.-. .-.. . ... / - .- -.- . / .- / .-.. .. - - .-.. . / - .. -- . which translates to 'even miracles take a little time' from my favorite movie, cinderella.

my teacher, mrs.zuckland, then collected everyone's slip and passed them back out, making sure nobody got their own.

i decoded the slip on my slip of paper, soon seeing that it says, "johnson is the best." of course, i knew this was one of my best friends, jack johnson. i laughed a little before mrs.zuckland silenced the class and one by one had everyone read their message.

i listened for someone to read mine, eventually being half way through the room when it came my turn to read the message i decoded. "johnson is the best," i read as everyone laughed and i handed the slip back to jack.

once everyone in my row read their codes, i heard a small voice say, "even miracles take a little time." i turned my head to see anastasia, one of the quietest, but most beautiful, girls in my grade reading the code i wrote. i raised my hand as she handed me back the paper with a smile.

the rest of the class read through theirs before we watched a video, wrapping up class. we had a few minutes left to pack up our stuff and talk. i was about to ask johnson about plans for this weekend when i felt a tap on my shoulder.

i turned to see the small girl who received my code standing there. "that's from cinderella, right? i used to watch that movie every day when i was little," she told me.

"yeah, it is, it's my favorite movie. i still watch it every day," i laughed. "maybe we-" i was cut off by the bell. i couldn't help but think 'oh, that clock. old killjoy.' from the opening scene of the movie.

"see you around, sammy," she said before walking out the classroom door, hugging her books to her chest.
