The GPS said that they were almost at Mexico, but he couldn't see land for miles. They were going to die.
Cress walked into the cockpit, laughing at a joke her children had told her. Thorne whipped around and stared at her. It was obvious that he was terrified. Cress's joy died immediately. "...What's wrong?" She asked hesitantly.
He took a deep breath and stared down at the floor, studying it. "The ship... It... I thought we had a full tank of gas before we left..."
Cress scrunched her eyebrows together, trying to comprehend what he was saying. Tears pooled in her eyes as she understood what he was trying to say. "You're kidding, right?" He looked away. "Carswell..."
"I wish I was." Thorne mumbled. Cress gasped and a hand flew up to her mouth. Horror filled both of their expressions. Cress walked towards her husband and wrapped her arms around him, Thorne returned the gesture. "I'm sorry."
"No." Cress said.
"What?" He pulled away.
"If we can survive falling to Earth once, we can do it again." Cress said.
"We're in the middle of the ocean, there's no land around for thousands of miles. And we have children with us this time."
Cress gulped. "We can't give up." He stared at her for a long time before he finally gave in.
"Okay." He said with a serious look on his face. "I'm going to go look for an emergency kit. You go gather the kids. We'll meet in the foyer." She nodded as a tear slipped from her eye. She was beyond scared. She was terrified. Cress knew that she needed to try though. If she didn't try, then she wouldn't be worthy of her family's love.
A pained expression fell over Thorne's face. He pulled Cress into a comforting hug, although his heart was beating faster than a cheetah running. "It's going to be alright, Cress."
She had her tiny arms wrapped around him, and he could feel her nodding against his chest. He pulled a few centimeters apart so he could look at her. He craned his neck down and kissed her gently. Cress didn't dare to resist. She ran her hands through his hair, pulling him closer to her. Cress didn't want to let him go, but she knew that she had to go get the kids. She pulled back, biting on her lip.
"I love you." She whispered.
"I love you too." Thorne replied. He kissed her forehead, and Cress untangled her hands from his hair. She stepped back and began to walk towards the kids room. Cress only paused once, to look at her handsome husband one last time.
She knew that they weren't going to make it.
