Chapter 1 - The Beginning

The world was never ready for what was about to happen, at least not half of it.....

My eye lids peel open as shafts of sunlight fall through my swamp green curtains and into my room.My room was nothing special , only about 2 metres square with the same walls the same green as the curtains. One dusty window so smeared you couldn't see through it with 3 great spider leg cracks running along it ready to break the window apart at a moments notice.

Just as my eyes open I hear a voice, undoubtedly the reason for my wakening . It was my mothers grumpy voice which cut through my thoughts",Rory, get up and get out of bed ! You only get one shot today!"She was talking about The Test. It was essentially what it seemed to be, a government run test which decides your fate in the world. Not that it matters any more. It was over 20 years ago, 3/4 of the male proportion of the world rose up and diminished all the culture we knew. Woman were thrown to the side, no more valuable then cattle.

We live in slums, they live in palaces, we we have no rights, they hold theirs as well as ours. Men live in a separate city from us, apparently so we don't give them diseases but its only so we are to far away to rebel.Woman and men only meet in The Haze.The Haze is a large hazy dome which covers a small city, this is where all the outcasts live,men and woman alike who are to bad to mingle with normal society, and essentially The Haze is a huge prison.The Haze is the only place a woman and a man are both the same.Its also the place you go if you fail The Test..

There are only a few jobs a woman can do in society, which is decided in The Test. A farmer, Essential services, Shopkeeper and Enforcer. Essential services sew, cook, clean and any other spare jobs, and its the worst job to be allocated. Farmer and Shopkeeper are good but boring AF. Enforcers are woman who take on the role as any of the jobs above but work for the government, and they keep us in line. They are the ones who stop rebellions as they are everywhere, and could be anyone.This is one of the main reasons that the government has ruled for as long as they have because they put out and arguments against the government by killing potential troublemakers. You don't mess with Enforcers, but you don't know who they are so basically you don't mess with the government. Enforcers are paid well and looked after, its a sought after job. The Test decides where you will sit on society, and you better hope to God you do well, there a lot on the line. And my tests today.
