I make my way to Zack's house. The wind begins pushing me back and I realize it's probably going to be a sand storm. Living in Arizona, you don't want to be caught in the middle of one of those storms, even though I have one time.
~Flashback~
"Mom please let me go check the mail.. You said our online clothes would be here today." She looks up at me, sighing before speaking, "I guess..". I smile and skip my way down the sidewalk. I make the way around the multiple corners I had to take and see the mailbox. I quickly swipe in the key and grab the mail, which is quite difficult because I'm only 4'1. I started walking back as the sky began to turn brown. I heard people whispering about how no one should be out here. Is something happening?? I start to pick up my pace and I see my mom's apartment in the distance. I begin to walk towards the destination but my sight begins to be blocked by sand and dust. Dirt and sand whirls around me as I'm trying to find my way home. I try to run past the harsh winds and I hold on to the mail with all my 6 year old hand power. I find my way to the house and walk inside. I see my mother on the couch, lighting this weird glass straw or something. Seeing that she has no idea of the situation I was just in, I say, "Do you even know what's going on outside?". She looks at me blankly and quickly puts away the glass thingy, as if I never saw it. "What's happening?" I walk closer to her, "There's a big storm outside and I was in the middle of it. I was scared!!" I whined. She looks at me, "Where's the mail?""Right here.." I throw it on the table and head to my small room. She doesn't even care, does she?
~Flashback~
I snap out of my flashback and realize that the wind is pushing harder than ever. I run up to Zack's door and knock on it. There is no answer. Realizing that the wind is picking up and dust is beginning to get in my eyes, I start to run back to my aun'ts house, which isn't very far at all. I'm in track, and people tell me I'm a pretty good runner. I make it inside before it gets too bad and see my aunt holding my baby brother in her arms. He looks up at me with tear stained cheeks and I instantly hug him and ask what's wrong. He repeats, "I didn't mean to.. I didn't mean to.. I didn't mean to!!". He cries loudly and buries his head in my aunt's shoulder. "Aw.. Buddy.. What didn't you mean to do?". He mumbles in my aunt's shoulder and I slowly make out the words, "This kid was in my face and was about to hit me so I hit first!!". I laugh, "Well nice job! Why are you crying?". My aunt glares at me, "Not the time Rebecca.""Sorry.. Trying to lighten the mood." I step back. "Now Clayton," My aunt kisses the top of his head, "you are young. You don't need to be getting in fights.. This is just a warning. You aren't in trouble, okay? Just go to your room..". She glares once again at me and makes her way to my brother's temporary room, "C'mon Clayton. Check out your room.". I sigh and sit on the couch. Why wasn't Zack there? He called not to long ago. I'll text him..
Hey Zack. Went by your house and you weren't there.. Everything good? (: Message me when you can!!
I set my phone down as my aunt walks in the living room. "Why are you so mean to your brother?"
"Me?" I look up at her, "What do you mean??". She sits in the recliner we had brought over from my mother's apartment when she left. My mother left everything at that apartment. She wanted a whole new life, without me and my brother and no memories attached. "That was rude to say something like that to him! He was already upset and you're promoting fighting? Since when Rebecca Lynn.".
Really? Saying my middle name.. You know I hate that. "I wasn't trying to do anything wrong. Just joking around??""Well," She scoffs, "it wasn't funny.". She grabs the remote harshly and turns on the news. I hate the news. I get up and walk into my room. I turn the light on and plop on my bed. I look at my phone, as a notification that someone has texted me pops up. It's from Zack.
You can't come over anymore. Sorry.
I look at the screen, confused and I reply with,
Okay?
Was he just ignoring me at the door? Is he mad at me too? I'm making everyone mad today, huh. I pull my blankets over me and begin to close my eyes. Maybe I'll just take a little nap. I close my eyes and drift off in minutes.
