Falling For You

“So…what do you think?” Kara asked as she twirled around in a puffy pink number. Her rosy cheeks were blushing harder than ever and her eyes twinkled happily. Her blonde hair was tied back and her Converse shoes stuck out from under the dress.

Amanda applauded, “So. Beautiful.”

“Seriously, you guys?” I grumbled. “Proms not even coming soon. It’s only October!”

“Nia, shut up, you are ruining my spunk,” Kara rolled her eyes.

I admit, I’m not the greatest person to hang with. I’m a rolling ball of sarcasm and I have a critical eye. It’s a wonder why I still have two best friends.

“Can I give you a haircut?” Amanda asked.

I fingered my cropped dirty blonde hair that hung straight down to my chin. I didn’t have bangs. I wondered if that was why Amanda wanted to cut my hair.

“I’m fine,” I said hastily.

“But your eyes are so pretty!” Amanda groaned, flopping onto the bench.

“And giving me bangs will somehow make my eyes pop?” I asked her, raising an eyebrow.

“Mind reader,” Kara snorted.

All of a sudden something tall and dark slammed into my side. I yelped, grabbing hold of the tackler and we both fell to the ground. The person had been holding a bundle of dresses and it showered around us like a waterfall. I cursed as I sat upright, groaning. The person, a he, sat up too, glowering at me.

“Geezus!” He said furiously. “I’m going to be so late.”

“Well sorry! Watch where you’re going next time,” I retorted.

“Whatever.”

He quickly got to his feet. I noticed that he was really tall, at least 6”2. He was a giant compared to my 5”5. His shaggy black hair cut across his face like a veil covering a corner of an eye. Bangs, I noted as I stared at his face. His eyes were chocolate brown.

“I’m sorry,” I muttered quickly, turning away from him back to Kara and Amanda. They were both giggling quietly. I couldn’t wait to find out what they were talking about.

Dress-Boy gathered up the dresses quickly and scurried out the back door that read ‘Employees Only’. Huh. So he worked here. We were both about the same age, 16, so I wondered why I’d never seen him at school before. He probably didn’t even go to the same school as I. Whatever.

“He. Is. Cute,” Amanda’s breathy voice filled my ear as we huddled in a circle.

“Totally, if he wasn’t Nia’s I’d totally go for him,” Kara said with a giggle.

I protested, “What? What are you talking about? He is not mine.”

“Omigosh, Nia you should totally go for him. I mean he’s so cute. And you talked to him first, of course he’s yours,” Amanda said, bopping my shoulder lightly.

“Our first words exchanged were words of anger,” I muttered rolling my eyes.

“Yeah, so? We are totally going dress shopping again tomorrow. Maybe he’ll be there again!” Amanda smiled, a twinkle in her blue eyes.

“Ugh, I hate you. You’re seriously dragging me out to go dress shopping just for a boy?” I asked her.

“Duh,” she snickered.

“The next time you see him, I dare you to ask him where the lingerie section is. Then I want you to do a flirty little twirl and stick out your chest,” Kara taunted.

“Overkill, mate,” Amanda shook her head, causing her brown hair to swing around wildly.

“But it’s a dare!” Kara protested. “You know you have to do any dare at all, or you’re buying sundaes at Cow Shake.”

“it’s so expensive,” I pleaded.

“Then do the dare.”

“Fine! I’ll do it… I dare you to go kiss that guy on the lips!” I said, pointing to a passing jock from West Minstrel High. He was a football player. I’d seen him the last time I’d played a rugby game at that high school.

Without further ado, Kara ran up to the jock and pressed her lips against his. He looked surprised and startled. Finally he pushed her away and wiped his lips on the back of his hand giving her an odd look. Kara was gone. Her self preservation broke away as she collapsed into giggles.

“Kara…you desperate virgin,” Amanda laughed.

“S-shut up!” Kara howled with laughter.

I was laughing too, just not doubled up in pain like Kara.

“You guys are totally hot together,” I said.

“No...way,” Kara groaned, “he’s blonde. You know I want a guy with black hair.”

“Your obsessions with guys like that,” I rolled my eyes.

“Whatever, black hair is so much more sexier,” Kara shrugged her thin shoulders.

At that, Amanda burst into a new laugh attack. We finally managed to gain composure. Everyone around us was staring. Whoops, I mouthed at my friends.

We ran out of the store laughing.

And guess who followed us out.
