The Beginning:
Ann Carrington was a name that meant money. She had always had what she needed and wanted. When her Mom and Dad passed away she was next in line for the money. Her only sibling, a sister, had left many years ago. She later died instantly in a car crash. Ann inherited everything the family owned.
She married at the young age of 18 and was widowed at the age of 25. Since her deceased husband was a man of means, he left her more assets than he did his own children. They had not approved of his marriage to someone 28 years younger.
Ann was not prepared for the loss of her husband. "How can I be a widow?" she cried. She was devastated. A friend flew to Texas to be with her but had to return to New York after 2 weeks. That was where she lived and worked. They hugged through tears and promised to keep in touch. Ann was at a loss as to what she would do without her beloved husband.
After only 6 months Ann began to want to date again. Kenneth, the owner of a construction company was 55 years old. Ann was easily attracted to older men. She had met him in a coffee shop one while out shopping. Ken noticed her immediately with her long dark hair and big brown eyes. He thought she was the classiest lady he had ever seen.
He decided he had to meet her. She would never forget that day. She was sitting there eating lunch when she noticed him stareing at her. She turned her face toward him and smiled a lovely smile. Immediately he took that as an opportunity for an introduction. As Ann listened to him talk about his business she felt immediately drawn to him. Or was she just lonely. She had no way of knowing for sure.
Only a week before meeting Ken Ann had a date with a new neighbor who moved about 5 houses down from her home. They had hit it off nicely. "Now what am I going to do?" she thought. Calling Cindy in New York, she explained. "I have strong feelings for both of these men. What should I do? I have never felt so conflicted before." Cindy explained that it was okay to see both men as long as she did not mislead either one.
Ann’s son, Joel wasn’t around often but had met both men. He felt Scott might be after his Mom’s money. Ann continued to see both men for a while, later telling Kenneth she was in love with Scott. Scott being only 39 years old, Kenneth felt like she had chosen him because he was younger. Yet they still managed to part friends.
Scott’s job was not as lucrative as Kenneth’s business. Still Ann loved him. He was soft-spoken, sweet natured, and very good looking. She trusted him. Her son was not as sure. Nor was Kenneth who continued to pop in unannounced for coffee. Ann tried to discourage him but he did not seem to want to cut the ties between them. He insisted they could still be friends.
One evening Kenneth stopped by while Scott and Ann were having a special dinner. It had been a year since they had met. The blinds were open and he Kenneth could see them. He also could hear them. While listening Kenneth knew Scott had proposed and watched her squeal with delight. “Oh yes, my darling. I want to get married as soon as possible. I love you so much.” Scott held her hand and pulled her up to kiss her in return for her answer. While holding her he heard something at the window. “What was that?” was all he got out before he saw Ken going to the front door.
Ann, this has got to stop and it will after tonight.” He planned to tell Ken the friendship was getting to be a bit much. They both felt that Ken needed to move on and get a life. But the more Ken saw when he visited the more appealing it became to him. He was not going to leave Ann’s life. He should have left that night and not looked back.
They invited Kenneth in not realizing that he was drunk. Scott and Ann tried to be sociable “Lets’ all have some coffee in the den.” Ann suggested. Ken sort of laughed and said, “I suppose coffee will do but I wouldn’t mind having something in it.” Ann and Scott pretended not to hear the last comment.
As they sipped coffee they noticed Kenneth dozing from too many drinks. They were in the midst of sneaking back to the dining room when they heard Kenneth mumbling in his sleep. They laughed at first while listening. Kenneth was trying to talk to someone named Bob about Ann. They even heard him mention money “Oh my gosh,” she thought, “he is actually talking in his sleep about my money.” Neither had realized how drunken Ken was when they let him in for coffee.
Ann immediately saw Scott’s anger as he shook Kenneth trying to get him alert. “Drink your coffee, you fool. Look at how drunk you are.” When Ken only mumbled, Ann watched in horror as he jerked Kenneth out of the chair. She had never seen this side of Scott before. Ann began to panic as Scott started hitting him continually with a closed fist. She had never seen him so angry. Grabbing her cell phone as she ran out the door she called 911. “Hurry please, he is going to beat him to death. Hurry.” Scott continued to scream obscenities at Kenneth while beating him.
Ann knew she would never love again. She was glad she knew the truth about both men but was sad they were dead.
Scott beat Kenneth to death right before the police shot Scott.
