Chapter 1
I’d never thought much of the four seasons until two years ago. I mean they come and go every year so they’re not that big a deal right? Spring means lambs being born and Easter. Summer means sunshine and ice cream. Autumn means brown leaves and forest walks. Winter means snow and Christmas. I guess the only time I’d thought about them was for a school project, back when I was eight. We had to write a poem about our favourite season. I think I chose summer because that’s my name. If you were an eight year old kid whose name was Summer, you’d probably do the same- am I right?
If I could go back and change that I would because summer only means bad things for me now, having to go and live with my aunt and uncle for the entire eight weeks. If only my mum would just come home. She’s been gone for just over two years now and I only got one postcard which was for my thirteenth birthday last month. This was what it said:
Dear Summer,
Happy Birthday Darling! I shall return home soon to see my teenager! I miss you so much baby! Not a day goes by without me thinking about my Summer! Mummy loves you lots and wishes you all the best! And I hope that the boarding school is as fun as it looks!
Lots of love,
Mummy xxx
First of all, I am not a snob like your stereotypical boarding school kid- I earned my place here by getting a scholarship. Second of all, I sent my mum a picture of the school building over a year ago and it does not look fun, not in any way. I guess if moth-bitten carpets and crumbling walls is your taste, you might say it looked fun. It isn’t fun though. My only saviour is the library which is where I spend most of my time studying. I don’t enjoy the Norwich Boarding School for Girls, I have to admit, but it’s better than being with my aunt and uncle, which is where I’m headed now...
