Chapter Four

  Jane stumbled into Maura's office with a morose expression. Maura, without even looking up from her computer noticed her mood by the clomping of Jane's feet.
 
  "Why are you grouchy?"

Jane looked down, fiddling with her badge she childishly replied.

   "I'm not..." Maura looked up at her and raised an eyebrow.

    "Lieutenant just gave me a hard time about being late, it's nothing." She walked over to Maura and stirred through the file on her desk. "What'd you find out about our victim?"

Maura swatted her hand away and began to re-organize the file the way she'd had it. "Well, she was indeed stabbed. The blade went through her pulmonary artery, causing her to bleed out within minutes. I also found traces of Benzoylmethyl Ecgonine,
Cocaine; coating her nasal cavities. Suggested by the coating, I'd say she's been using for at least ten years."

       "So, she's a heavy druggie? You think that's what got her killed? Maybe a deal gone wrong?"

"It's possible. I don't like to speculate, though."

Jane gave her an unamused eye roll. Maura began typing her report again, then stopped and alertly slammed her computer screen down. "You never told me what was bothering you yesterday, Jane."
She looked at Jane with a waiting expression.

   "Yeah... I was hoping for you'd forget?" Jane gave a guilty smile.

"Sit." Maura motioned her to the couch. Jane let out a sigh and threw herself onto the couch. Maura came and sat close to her and took her hand.

"I'm waiting..."

   "I just- when I picked the drawing up at the crime scene, and saw that women was mom, it made me think about our future..." She paused and looked intently into Maura's eyes.
  "Maura, I want to spend the rest of my life with you, I want to have children with you, and grow old together. But this job... I don't want to lose you, my entire world over a stupid badge."

Maura's eyes began to water and she smiled through her tears.

  "What? Did I say something wrong? Why are you about to cry?" Maura whispered a laugh,

"Jane, you've said nothing wrong. Hearing you say that you want to spend our lives together makes me- it makes me extremely ecstatic and emotional because I have never loved anyone or anything as much as I love you. Jane, I want you to be my future. Nothing will ever come between me and my love for you. I want to be with you, always."

  Jane nuzzled her head between Maura's neck and shoulder. Maura rested her head on Jane's and kissed her forehead. She closed her eyes as Jane ran her fingers up and down her thigh. With her free hand, Jane played with her badge and stared at it blankly. She brought herself back from the numbing trance and kissed Maura's lips gently and then patted her thigh.
  "I gotta go, babe."
She kissed Maura again,
  "I'll see you at home okay?"
Maura smiled and waved. She watched Jane walk towards the door.

"Wait!" Jane abruptly stopped and turned,

      "What?"

"I love you." 
All the blood in Jane's face rushed to her cheeks, turning them a pinkish-red. She looked down at the floor, then looked at Maura with bright eyes,

      "I love you more." She said giddily.
