Chapter 20

When I finally reached my room, I could tell that Laurane was already there before I even opened the door. I didn’t need to – I could hear the music coming from our room halfway down the hallway.

I opened the door and walked inside, turning the IPod that Laurane had down as I walked over to my bed. Laurane was in the shower, no doubt getting ready for her big date tonight.

I noticed that the song Laurane was playing was The Only Exception, by Paramore, which made me happy. Laurane’s music choice often varied by what mood she happened to be in, and Paramore was her favorite band, which meant that thankfully, Laurane must have been in a really good mood.

I lay down on my bed and noticed that there was a magazine on it. Excited, I picked it up, but I grimaced and threw it in the trash when I saw what it was about. It was called “Rabbits National”, and from the cover – which was sporting a terrifying picture of a bunch of rabbits – it seemed to be all about them. Ew.

Where in the world did Laurane even find this stuff?

At the moment, Laurane walked out of the bathroom, dressed in only a towel.

“That,” I said, glaring at her, “Is just flat out mean.”

I pointed towards the trashcan, which now had the magazine in it.

Laurane saw what I was talking about and laughed.

“Oh come on,” she said, “It’s funny.”

Laurane sat down on the edge of my bed and looked me in the eyes, suddenly acting serious.

“Sammi,” she said, “I need you to help me get ready.”

I nodded equally serious.

“Let’s begin the transformation,” I said, in a monotone voice.

That mad Laurane burst out laughing, which relieved me. I was glad that we were okay.

“Yes,” she said between bursts of laughter, “Let’s…transform…me!”

I led a giggling Laurane towards our vanity and sat her down in front of it.

“Let’s do this,” I said, walking towards our closet.

I wanted Laurane to look good, no matter how much I disapproved of Jesse and her going on a date, so I rifled through our closets in search of the perfect outfit.

And oddly enough, I wasn’t super opposed to Jesse and Laurane going on this date. I mean, sure, I certainly didn’t want Jesse to break Laurane’s heart or anything, but after talking to him today, I didn’t really think that he was actually going to.
