So yesterday I went to go see the third installment in the Divergent movie series. Granted, without reading the books. I started reading the first one a couple years ago, but got bored and stopped. So this rant has little to do with those books.
That said, I left the theater raging/halfway screaming even though I have no clue how it holds up to the book.
There are a couple reasons why I was so pissed. One is that I was unaware that the last movie was actually TWO movies. I went in thinking that I was about to get closure to a series that, up until this point, made very little sense to me. Did I get it? Eh... kind of. I know why stuff was the way it was for the most part. But I also came in hope for the ending, which I was curious about. Since I didn't intend on reading the books, my friends who have read them spoiled the very end for me. When I didn't get that, but instead another stupid "cliffhanger", I was pretty pissed. Now I know, but it still ticks me off that ANOTHER books to movies series is dividing the last story arc into two parts. It's a deliberate money grab that's starting to get on my nerves. I understand that some last books like Mockingjay are chopped full, so who knows.... maybe it was also necessary. But I'm still annoyed.
The second bit is an issue that started with the first movie (that I didn't intend on watching in the first place), and has built until I exploded yesterday. And that is the quality of the movies themselves.
The characters seem to have a forced development. It takes me some time to actually get interested in what's going on, or sometimes I have to force myself to feel interested. Unfulfilled potential. Questionable plots. And the biggest annoyance of all... the repetition. I swear, each film almost feels the same. They end the same, begin the same, and how the action is carried out feels the same. I've kind of enjoyed the movies up until now, but now I kind of dislike them. Because I've reached the point where I can't be fooled by how good it looks anymore.
Due to this frustration, I plan on actually trying to get through the books now. I think its probably going to be better than what the movies are doing.
Also, this is my opinion. I don't believe anyone has to dislike the movies, or the books. And I won't disrespect anyone who enjoys them. I don't even fully hate it, and like I said, my friends are fans of it. But I would like to know what others think of all this, so feel free to comment if you'd like.
