Prologue

Edward Carter, a man who deemed himself powerful and smart in his Armani suit, clutched his briefcase and walked briskly toward the one and only entrance to the large, gray building, surrounded with barbed wire. At the door, he was greeted first by a series of security questions and identity tests, then by an armed guard, who escorted him silently upstairs to a plain looking door, flanked by two men in army uniforms. They snapped to attention as Edward approached, inflating his already massive ego. The guard to the left stretched across the door frame to grasp the door handle, and with a soft click, swung it open. Edward nodded to the guards and walked through the door.

Inside was a black polished circular table, surrounded by people. Edward strode briskly to the only open seat, sat in the padded office chair and addressed the waiting group.

"Are the..... muscles ready to move?" he asked impatiently.

"Yes, sir. Ready to move at any time." responded a uniformed woman with black hair pulled into a bun at the nape of her neck.

With a quick grin of satisfaction, Edward turned to a small man in a white lab coat and a mop of unruly blonde hair, and asked, "What about transportation?"

The man visibly quaked in his seat, but replied in a almost steady voice, "Not yet, sir. We are almost ready for testing."

"When," Edward started in a menacing tone, "will the testing be finished?"

The small amount of confidence the man had was smashed into pieces. "A month at the least. Maybe up to a year."

Edward pondered that for a moment, then said to the man, "I sincerely hope, for your sake, that that time period is closer to a month than a year. Begin the tests immediately. Alert me when they are nearly finished and we will call another meeting. Dismissed."

The man in the lab coat hurried out, and Edward turned his head toward the rest of the group, unleashing a wicked grin. Someone new to this group might interpret some level of satisfaction in this grin. This group knew better.
