"Damnit Cas! Please just answer this one prayer for me. Wherever you are, please answer." Dean sat at the edge of his bed, rubbing his hands together and hanging his head in defeat. He knew Cas hasn't answered in months, knowing his attempt was futile. But Dean never gave up that easily, even he knew that.

The hunter sighed, dropping his hands and setting them on his knees.

"Fine, then don't answer." He said to himself, rising from his seat on the bed and was about to leave before he heard the familiar flap of wings and a sudden gust of wind. He turned around, his lips involuntarily turned upward into a small smile.

"Hello Dean." Castiel said. The angel stood before the hunter, dressed in his usual black and white suit with the infamous beige trenchcoat over it. Dean smiled wider, taking in the the sound of the angel's rough voice as he snapped out of his daze and came back to reality.

"What is this one about? You didn't send any sort of prayer to me." Castiel pointed out. Not complaining about the lack of prayer, the angel knew the hunter just wanted to spend some time with him as he's been ignoring Dean's prayers for the reason of mixed feelings.

"Look, Cas I just needed some help. It's been a little topsy-turvy lately with Sammy out on a week long run and needed some help on a case I took up since he's been gone. I didn't know who else to call." Dean scratched the back of his head nervously, hoping the angel would take his offer to help with research.

Castiel sighed, dropping his shoulders then looking to the floor as if he had better things to do.

But Dean knew better, knowing Cas would never pass up an opportunity to be with him. The angel cracked a small smile as he put his hands up to say he had nothing better to do but spend time with the hunter. Dean curled the lips into a small smile like Cas' as he ushered the angel out to the main part of the bunker to sit and help with research; the hunter's hand never leaving the angel's shoulder until he invited him to sit across from him.

Castiel knew very little about love, but he was old enough to know what it consisted of and what made it love. He felt it once, when he lost his grace and was forced to be human; having no choice but to feel what every human would feel. Hunger, thirst, deprivation of sleep. But nothing was more painful than the deprivation of love. When he finally regained the power of an angel, he lost every feeling and meaning of the word love. He felt something when he was with Dean, but could never find the word for it.

Praying to a God that he knew didn't exist, he prayed for the feeling of it being love.

Dean had a basic understanding of love, feeling it when he was with Lisa and Ben and knowing it was okay because he was living a normal life. But now it was different, being a hunter again, he knew there would be no time for love anymore. Nor did he need it. One of the very first rules of being a hunter; never let your heart rule over your head. Dean has let that happen more than once or twice, and it never ended well. He left behind the simplest idea of having a normal life that had the simplest thought of love.

Never thinking it could ever be possible to love again.
