Nichole continued walking down the sidewalk. The bar was just up ahead. In her town, you could be under 21 and still go to a bar. You just couldn't drink. It was a little after 9pm. Nichole had just finished her 4th class today at her college, UOV. 'I need a fucking drink' she thought to herself, then cursed under her breath, knowing she couldn't.
The night was a bit chilling, Nichole could see her breath. Her bag was on her shoulder and her phone was in her hand. Thinking it was going to be a warm October night, Nichole left her jacket in her car.
As Nichole walked, she felt eyes on her. She stopped and looked around. 'Nichole' she heard someone whisper. She whipped her head around but no one was there. Her heart was racing, the chill air was not helping. There was a short brick wall to her left and a row of trees behind it. There was a chance someone was hiding in the trees, watching her. She started into them. She felt like she was making eye contact with someone. As if she was looking at a scared child who wouldn't come out of its hiding place.
The bar was a few feet away and a group of people came out, laughing and talking. Nichole looked away from the trees quickly, so she wouldn't be thought of as a crazy person staring at something that wasn't there. She also knew those kids from her college. When they passed by, they said nothing to her though. Nichole longingly looked after them for a moment when their backs were to her. Once they were far enough away, she looked into the darkness once one before turning and walking into the bar.
The warmth and coziness of the bar was a huge relief from the chill outside. Most of the people here were college students or professors since the bar was so close to the campus. Being only 17, Nichole could not drink. She walked up to the bar, set her bag down on a stool and took a seat in the one next to it. The bartender came up to her and asked her what she wanted. "An iced tea please".
Nichole knew how the bartenders worked. If it was Jacob, the tall, blonde hair, green eyes one, he would slip some alcohol into a ladies drink if she was cute or if she whispered those "magic words" into his ear. Connor was the sweet one. He only slipped you alcohol if he knew you personally and he gave him "the look", meaning you had a rough day, a family member or friend died or you were just dumped. The head bartender, Ren was older and didn't put his job on the line. If you were under 21, no alcohol for you if Ren was there.
Today, it was Jacob. "Slap on a bit more makeup and maybe I'll make you tipsy" he said with a sideways sneer as he set the drink down in front of her. Nichole stuck her middle finger up at him and sucked in her straw.
"You don't have the ass for it. I'd have to break you open. Rip your pu-"
he was cut of by Ren covering his mouth and shoving him away. "Shift's over, go home and study" he said.
Jacob grabbed the bar to catch his balance. He gave Ren a dirty look before throwing his towel down and walking to the back. "Thank you for, yet another save" Nichole said to him. "No problem" he responded. This happened every time she came in here. After two more Iced teas Nichole pulled out her phone and looked through the texts she's gotten in the last few hours. After she was done responding, she looked up and jumped, surprised to see a man had taken a seat next to her.
"Sorry, didn't mean to scare ya" the man says.
"It's okay" Nichole says in response.
"The names Steven Thomas" he says.
"Nichole" she responds. The man is tall, skinny, he is wearing a honey colored pullover and some black jeans. His hair is dark blonde, and shines in the lights above them. His voice is deep and a bit raspy. Kinda sexy.
"So what is a beautiful girl like you doing here, in college town?" Steven asks. Nichole tenses up at the word "beautiful" she knew what was bound to happen when a man points out the attractiveness of a younger female in a bar, late at night.
"Trying to relieve some stress" Nicole answers, being a truthful person.
"Ah, I as well" Steven says. Nichole just nods. Ren looks over at her, then at Steven, then at her again. Giving her the, "need me?" look her Nichole shakes her head.
"So what stress you trying to forget about?" Steven asks.
"Oh just, school. Taking a lot of classes is a bit rough" she says.
Steven nods.
"Certain, conditions in my line of work can get to me. It's nice to come here and forget" Steven says, taking a sip of his drink. Nichole looks up at him, curious.
"And what is this line of work?" she asks.
Steven thinks for a moment, then looking back at Nicole.
"It's like a hunt. Sometimes the realization of what you are actually doing hits you, and it hits hard" he says. Smiling because he knew he had her hooked.
"A hunt?" Nichole asks, raising an eyebrow. A move she shouldn't have made. Steven nods.
"I hunt things, kill them, dispose of them. They rot in the eternal pits of hell, and knowing I put then there, heartbreaking at times. Steven notices the horror of Nichole's face.
"I'm an exterminator" he says laughing.
Relief washed over Nichole.
"Ohhhhh" she said, letting out a nervous laugh.
