"Look Out!"
The sickening crunch and scrape of metal on metal assaulted my ears as the car rolled off the road and into a ditch. Then everything went black.
That's all I remembered when I woke up at the hospital.
"Where is he?" I asked the nurse frantically. Images of Derek flashed through my head: his soft brown hair, strong arms, perfect face, and lastly his eyes, his deep chocolate brown eyes.
"Who?" The nurse asked, clearly startled by my sudden outburst.
"Derek, my boyfriend! He was in the car with me," I said. She dropped her gaze from mine. "No," I said, a sob rising in my throat.
"He died upon impact, they could barely identify the body, his injuries were so bad." She said, her voice so low I could barely hear.
Right at that moment a wave of pain and sadness hit me. Is this what heartbreak feels like? He told me we'd be together forever. Forever.... it's a lot shorter than i thought it would be.
"Oh, sweetie I'm so sorry. Would you like something to eat?" She asked with genuine sympathy in her voice.
"No thank you," The words coming out robotically.
"Okay, get some rest, I'm here if you need me." She said sweetly.
I lay back and just as I'm closing my eyes, I see the nusre put sleep drugs in my IV. My mind wandered back to Derek, the smell of his leather jacket filling my nose.
"Derek!" I said joy bubbling up inside me.
"Anabelle!" He yelled, running toward me.
"I thought I'd lost you," I whispered into the safety of his embrace.
"I'm right here you never lost me," He smiled at me, "All you have to do is wake up."
Wake up
Wake up
Wake up
Those last two words rang in my head as I woke up. I could still smell his jacket, and feel his arms around me. Maybe it wasn't a dream, maybe Derek is still alive!
"Hey, Anabelle." My mom said walking in.
"Hi mom!" I chirped, my mood majorly improved with the hope of Derek living.
"Wow, you seem to be feeling a lot better."
"I am!" I replied, still smiling.
"Are you feeling well enough to go to Dereks funeral?"
