"May I be excused?" I said as I sat up from the dinner table. "Johnny!" My mother barked. "Sit down and eat your food." I sat back down quickly. "Mom can I go play outside?" I said. "After I finish eating." I added quickly.
My mom heaved a sigh. "Johnny," she looked at me seriously. "There's no 'outside' to go to."
I knew she was right. I looked out the window. Through the torn up curtains the so called 'outside' was barely visible. Huge clouds of steam covered the window. The rays of the sun glared on the worn out streets. We heard the chanting of angry protesters marching across the town. Headed toward the military checkpoint again. I thought. I was once aloud to go outside. When I was 9, I think. I'm 11 now, and things aren't so swell. The world is getting worse and worse. Back in 2018 we thought things were going to get better.
We thought we would cure cancer, travel outside the solar system, end global warming. But no, things have gotten worse. Our economy is failing. Military patrol the streets several times a day. (Not to mention we are at war.) And worst of all, 'outside' is a distant memory. Nobody goes out there except soldiers and protesters. The smog out there is so thick, you can choke in seconds. This planet is so polluted, you can hardly believe this the oceans were blue at one point! This is our world. This is what 'outside' feels like. And things are about to get worse.
