The Secret

....... Why did I say that? Why did I have to say that I could keep a secret?? He- He was joking right?! ...... No. He wasn't.
He looked me in the eyes; filled with fear and disbelief. He slowed his step until he stopped in his tracks. He gestured me to come closer. I obliged and walked slowly but surely towards him. I didn't know if I could really trust him yet. I just met him about an hour ago. I came as close as my comfort-zone could let me. He leaned in; about 5 inches away from my face. His voice was still dry; but every word was told in a tone that was deadly frightening.
"................ The mine I worked at: the only mine in miles: was caved in a couple weeks ago. " ...... I. .... I-I can't believe this! I-I know too many people at the coal mines! They always came to visit the town and to sell their coal too the energy company. How could something like this happen without it appearing on the newspaper?! " D-Did anyone call for help? " He looked away and took a few steps. " No. We were in a middle of a thunder storm and the power went out. Our only drive back to town is when the truck came to pick up the coal. I had to walk to town; but I didn't know the way. "
I stuttered my next question with worry in my tone. " A-Are you the only one alive? " He hanged his head. He took a while to answer, but when he did; I wish I never came out for a walk tonight.

" ....... No. Everyone except me died within the collapse. "
