Prologue

I groaned, listening to the sound of my alarm clock blasting through my ears. Burying my face into my pillow, I still can’t help but notice the the annoying sound, continuing to get on my nerves. Barely resisting to break the damn thing, I take a deep breath and press the mute button, finally feeling peace again. Just as I thought I could get away with a few more minutes of sleep, my mother barged into my room with my sleeping baby sister in her arms.

She was a beautiful woman. Short curly blonde hair, blue sparkling eyes, and a dashing smile. Her attire was a short sleeved black dress, hugging her curves perfectly, a neatly-ironed blazer, and some black stilettos.

“YOU’RE LATE FOR SCHOOL!” she yelled, dragging my bed sheets away, exposing my teddy bear PJ’s.

I glared at her, scratching the dried rheum from my eyes. “No, i’m not. My alarm clock just went off. It’s just 7:00 pm. I have plenty of time.”

She glared back with her piercing blue eyes, grabbing my wrist and forcefully pulling me out of bed. I whimpered, feeling her sharp nails dig into my delicate skin.

“Well, I don’t have that kind of time. My job called me and said I have to come in early. I’m dropping you off at school, as well as dropping off Lilly at the daycare center.” she spat back, releasing her strong grip.

I slowly shuffle over to my nightstand, opening the small drawer and pulling out a pair of black frames. Carefully placing them on the top of my nose, I walk out of my door and into the bathroom right across the hallway. Feeling the coldness of the white tiles under my feet, I shiver, rubbing my arms for heat. I cringe at my reflection, looking at the ugliness that is me. My hair is basically everywhere, and I have dark bags under my eyes, making me feel like a vampire who stayed up all night or never slept.

However, the truth is... I haven’t slept. For days. I’ve been studying for my exams that are coming up soon, worrying that I would get a good enough result to go to the collage i’ve always dreamed of. This is the first night i’ve had a tiny bit of sleep. But my mother had to ruin that. She wouldn’t understand how hard i’ve been working just to get as far away from her as possible. She doesn’t even CARE.

I squeeze some toothpaste onto my toothbrush, quickly screwing the top back on and placing it in its rightful spot. After scrubbing my teeth for 2 minutes, I spit out the minty fresh liquid, placing my toothbrush back into the toothbrush holder.

Gently combing through all the tangles in my hair with my comb, I still notice the ugly dark bags under my eyes. I never used to look like this. Everyone will laugh at me if I come to class like this.

I continued combing through my messy brown hair, until an idea popped into my head. If you were in the same room as me, you could have possibly seen a lightbulb appear on top of my head.

I opened a cabinet, taking out a little pot of eye-cream. My mom would probably scream at me for using something that’s hers, but I don’t care. Applying a thin layer onto the dark spot, I glance up at the mirror, feeling relieved that I won’t have to deal with that anymore. Finally completing my complete morning-makeover, I tip-toe over to my bedroom, checking if my mom is still there. Luckily, she isn’t, which means I have some time to get dressed.

Turning towards my wardrobe, I think of what i’m going to wear. Since I don’t have a very large choice of clothing, I decide that i’ll wear a regular black top with some white shorts and my usual blue flats.

Just as I finished slipping on my shoes, my mom barged back into the room and dragged me out without a word.

“Are you seriously is such a hurry?” I asked, wishing that her tight grip would loosen a bit.

Suddenly feeling a light breeze, I realize my mom has already dragged me out of the house.

Stopping in the middle of her tracks, she lets go of my arm and runs over to the garage. In a few minutes, our car drives out. It stops in front of me, before opening the door.

“Get in the car,” my mom sternly said, motioning for me to sit beside her at front.

Life is so difficult.
