Color Guardian - Vernon

Vernon surprises the reader at her colorguard competition.

You put down your phone and smiled. The support that Vernon always pumped into your passionate color guard performances was beyond empowering, and you couldn't have asked for anything different... though it would be nice if he could actually watch your performances. His own career always had him tied down, so he was never able to come and watch. You understood and he was always apologetic, but it was still very unfortunate.

It stung even more now, this performance in particular being a championship color guard performance.

"Guys, we gotta hurry, they're starting soon!" Vernon urged his members, running to the stadium doors. He had managed to grab a window of time to watch your performance and wanted to surprise you with a visit. He also somehow got all 12 of the others to come with him.

"Where's the food stand?" Mingyu asked with concerning sincerity.

"I don't see it, but we could always look for a vending machine," Wonwoo responded.

"Are you serious?" Vernon exclaimed. Seungcheol shot Mingyu and Wonwoo the dad look, and the two starving children sighed in perfect synchronization. With a stern nod, Vernon led everyone into the stadium and up the steps of the seating area, all the way at the top.

Meanwhile, your team had just been called out by the announcer and you took one final breath of confidence before walking out from the stands.

As soon as you appeared on the floor, wild cheering ensued. Louder than regular crowd cheering. In fact, it almost sounded as if the entire audience was located in one section of the bleachers. It drew your attention so that your eyes scanned the area, soon locking onto a group of familiar faces, all cheering louder than anyone. In the middle of the group was the face you were hoping to see the most at any given performance.

Despite the distance between you both, you made firm, knowing eye contact as you smile broke wider and wider. Vernon's heart just flooded with warmth when seeing your reaction, and he started cheering as well.

You were filled with a positive energy you hadn't felt in a while and you confidently took your position, lifting your flag upright. The show started, and you let yourself go. With every wave or spin of your flag, Vernon and the others cheered louder, encouraging you more and more.

Vernon was beyond proud and impressed. Of course he'd heard about the things you did, but this was his first time seeing you in action. His eyes followed you exclusively during the entire performance, and as it drew to a close, he was sure his hands would be swollen from too much clapping.

You approached the stand and set your flag aside. When you lifted your head, you saw an ecstatic Vernon charging towards you. He crashed into you and grabbed you into a tight hug.

"You were so awesome, amazing job!" he said with an excited laugh traveling through his words.
"I can't believe you came!!" was all you could respond, still in shock of his presence.
"We got a few hours for a break, where else was I gonna go?"
"Home to sleep?"

He pulled back and shook his head, laughing. You knew the answer, but you weren't about to waste an opportunity to nag him about taking care of himself. He took your hand just as the other members came down the steps of the bleachers. You were soon bombarded with greetings and various praises for your performance. You also noticed Vernon holding your hand tighter the closer another member came towards you. Honestly, this kid...

"Guys, let's all go get something to eat!" Seungcheol chimed, breaking the scene, "I'll pay~"

Mingyu and Wonwoo cheered almost as loud as they were during your performance at the mention of food, and there was nothing to do but agree. You and the boys exited the stadium, heading for the nearest food place. Vernon didn't let go of your hand at any point, but you had no complaints.
