A/n: Finally on school holidays which means more frequent updates. I'm one day early but anyhow, hope everyone has a Happy Easter x
Your stomach twisted at the sight of the small children gleefully running about the city street. Several emotions were felt in a confusing blur at the very remembrance of the date; though you pinned nostalgia as the strongest. Today was a special day, for some anyhow. Children within the safety of the inner wall would be eating themselves sick on various forms of chocolate, whilst others relished the taste of the smallest piece- if fortunate. Still it was not the novelties that painted the day as significant to you, but the undying surge of recollection that had formed a mantra within your memory.
Your f/c attire had been rendered untidy from a morning of tag, though you felt no need to correct it. It had been the first time you'd played such a game without changing, without second thought and without regard for being deemed respectable. It had been the first time in a long while in which you actually felt like a child. Your mother would give quite the tongue lashing once she saw the state of your appearance, but you cared not. You skipped away from the others, a light flush of joy on your cheeks hinted you had been laughing continuously. You jumped to a stop beside the young boy with a mop of two tone hair; staring at the reflection of you both in the shop window. You resorted to pulling faces to source further amusement for yourself when he did not speak, but rather stared fixated on the shop's contents. His golden eyes were wide with awe and his mouth dropped open in invitation at the sight of the numerous articles of egg shaped confectionary.
Almost subconsciously he muttered "I wish I knew what it tasted like..."
A pang of guilt hit your chest at the statement. You'd been so pleased to be welcomed by those of Wall Rose that you'd almost felt at home here. Albeit, such a place was no appropriate residence for someone of royal blood. You felt pity for the boy; he'd laughed alongside you and had even agreed not to tag you at one point. There were times like this when you believed your heritage to be a burden, a restraint. You were far from cut out for any impending royal duties. Yet, a second thought painted it as exactly the opposite.
Your palm traced the coins in your pocket- a safety precaution, in case you became separated from your parents for longer than intended. Your gaze landed on the boy whom remained enamoured by the display. With a smile you strode away before stepping inside the shop momentarily.
He glanced down at the morsel extended to him with eyes wide in disbelief. The first syllable of a why left his lips, though it immediately changed to a thankyou. You smiled silently, before being pulled into a tight hug. It as a warm, friendly embrace- the boy's slightly portly build made it all the more cuddly. You broke apart, just in time to hear the sound of a carriage making it's way down the street. At the clop of hooves indicating your inevitable beckoning for departure you excused yourself. Just as you grudgingly began to stride away, a hand around your wrist halted you.
"I'll never forget this... Or you," he murmured- his aureate eyes twinkling with evident sadness. A benign curve covered your lips and soon your tone.
"I'll never forget you, um-" your search for a title was cut short.
"Jean. Jean Kirchstein."
Since that day, over a decade had passed. You'd changed alongside the world, you'd grown and matured to fit exactly your parents regal expectations. Still you found comfort one day of the year, when you recalled one aspect, one promise that remained unwavering. I'll never forget you Jean.
It was this year that one of the travels had landed you in that very same town. The place was brimming with soldiers; a rowdy bunch they were. Your nose was not upturned however and you rather scanned the crowd in a half hearted attempt at landing on a familiar face. A flash of ash brown accompanied by mahogany locked your gaze on a particular male. You halted in your tracks and stared as they passed, many of which casting confused glances in return. Sensing eyes on him the male turned to face you- his features though matured, undoubtedly recognisable. He was tall and lithe; likely from military training. His comrades grunted as he interrupted the flow of traffic by stopping and staring at you. With brows knitted for a moment he considered the possibility before it was confirmed by you mouthing his name. You peered over his shoulder as he left the group to stand in front of you. A dark haired boy of similar age adorned with freckles stared though kept walking despite confusion.
A butterfly like kiss was placed on the back of your hand in greeting. "I never forgot you, but I never got your name," he gave a light titter.
You smiled, "Y/n L/n."
He registered the name in his mind before prematurely gaining a dusting of red upon his cheeks. "Well, seeing how you look today I uh, don't think I ever will be able to forget you." His fellow troops had all continued on down the path, leaving him in the company of you alone. Jean debated internally whether or not he should go through with the following or not, though your kind eyes gave him all the assurance he needed.
"Go out with me Y/n, make this another Easter I'll always remember."
