"Hello everyone, there is a new person in class today, everyone say hello to Kahia and welcome her to World History. Kahia do you mind standing up and telling us a little about you?" I look around, I managed to snag a back seat when I walk in but when the teacher, Mrs. Yegan, pointed me out I felt like I was cornered by everyone's greedy eyes. I slowly stand up... " Hello, as you can see I'm blonde, I'm 5'3"... ah screw it, Hi I'm Kahia I like to read and I'm really good in math. When I touch someone I get to see their future. Nice to meet you." I sat down and put my headphones in. Okay so maybe I over did it but I would rather people kept their distance because I had seen what their like and I would rather them live their lives happily then for them to die because of me. At my last school my best friend Steh was the only one who I couldn't see a future for and that was why with her I could let my guard down until one day she disappeared and I finally saw her future, it was a black nothingness... the one of death and I knew I caused it. When I moved here with my gramz I swore things would be different, I would make sure to stay an outcast.
First period went by fast along with second, math, but as I walked into third I felt a little lost. I scan the back row for a seat but the only one left is in the corner right next to the teacher's desk, great. I walk over and sit down but just as I get situated and turn to face the front I get hit in the eye with a wadded up piece of paper... nice, just flipping wonderful. There was something on the paper so I opened it up and... "Hey new girl, nice rack! HAHAHA." Ah disgusting, I threw it away and faced the front in time to catch a guy mouth "Sorry" back at me as he points at a football player who is laughing with his goonies. One of the jocks made eye contact with me and I stuck my tongue out which made his cheeks flush. Serves his right, I look back up at the sound of laughter and the guy who apologized is laughing which must be contagious because before I knew it I started to laugh too. Everything had just settled down a few minutes later when the wackiest teacher walk in. Her hair was black and green in a pigtail on one side and blue and pink in a braid on the other, with white ends. Her makeup was blood red eye shadow with purple lips and her puffy black laced dress, as cute as it was, only added to her wackiness but that didn't stop me from noticing her gloves. Who wore gloves inside in August, I mean I have have an excuse for my worn in finger-less ones that I never take off, I guess it's nothing to worry about. " Halo everyone, Oh welcome to the class Kahia... How is Rose?" Ooh creepy! How did she know gramz? "Oh gramz is okay.." I answer quietly. "Don't make it so awkward I'm Mrs. Red Bird, your gramz and I used to chill back in the days." She says well she leans against the black board. " Well way to make yourself sound old and never use chill and old days in a sentence together it's sooo not cool." I say with dragged out sarcasm causing the whole class to echo with laughter. I look around feeling confused, how was that so funny? After the slight exchange of words, science class began but nothing much happened other than it was the funnest class today. Everyone had fun, I think, when the bell signaling the end of third period rang almost the whole class yelled boo causing the teacher and I to share a secret smile.
I walked out of class thinking i was mentally prepared for what was to come next, which was supposed to my guitar lessons, but I wasn't mentally prepared to crash into a solid wall of jocks as they bullied the guy who helped me at the beginning of class. "Hey!" I yelled as I pushed the closest jock without thinking. I dropped on my butt so hard but I couldn't feel the pain yet as I watched the jock's future flash by in slow motion.
He walks down to the cemetery every day at 7 o'clock with a hand full of forget me nots'. "I miss you so much Jess. I don't know how to live with you gone.." He says as he starts to cry and takes a huge swig of the vodka in his other hand. He drops to his knees and yells, "Why! Why did I let you leave that morning... the weather was bad and I knew it wasn't safe so why..." He sobs quietly now and then he stands up slowly, placing the flowers by the gravestone of the love of his life, Mary Personifies, and then he walks home to his beat up little trailer on the back of his parents property. Getting up every morning to go to work at the local mechanic shop only to come to back and do it all over again as if his day is on repeat.
I shake my head and try to stand up to help the guy but I feel tears leak from my eyes as I recall the pain that the jock is gonna go through. I finally manage to stand, once I find my grounding I grab the guy who helped me and ran for it. You could hear the jocks yelling after us but we didn't care, we ran around the nearest corner and watched to see if we were safe. "Thank you" He says, I give him a confused look, "What for?" I ask. He just smiles and says "You just saved my life like Superman saved Lois Lane." Wow. "I don't think I fly but okay.." I look down at noticing that we're holding hands. I release his hand and jump away... Oh no I didn't see anything... what if he's like Steh... Oh no. I hadn't even noticed that I was shaking my head and had slowly walked backwards, away from him. "Why didn't I.. Why can't I see your future?" I asked with out think because I was slightly freaking out. "Oh that's easy, you can't see the future of anyone who isn't normal or non-magical" He says as if its nothing. I look at him like WTF and then I just walk away to stunned to even reply and with that I made my way to my guitar lesson.
