"Punch buggy silver!" Katie whooped, laying a soft punch on Brennen's shoulder, causing him to exaggeratedly swerve into the next lane.
"What? No! That totally wasn't a buggy. That doesn't count. I didn't see it."
"It was too a buggy! So what if you didn't see it? It's not my fault you weren't paying attention." Brennen rolled his eyes with a smile played on his lips.
They had been driving around for the past 30 minutes and still have yet to talk about whatever it is they had planned this little trip for. Katie had to admit she was having a good time. They picked up some nachos from some sketchy burger joint and picked at it while Brennen drove seemingly aimlessly around the city. They had a debate about who's the klutziest and who's done the most stupid stuff. They agreed that the both of them were equally klutzy.
Brennen pulled into the parking lot of what seemed to be a church. He took the key out of the ignition, placed it in his cup holder, unbuckled his seatbelt, and turned his body towards Katie. Katie said nothing. She looked at him through the parting of her bangs. The moon made his eyes look almost white. His lips were a dark pink and his hair looked out of place due to the intense amount of running his fingers through it before the party.
"So.." Brennen looked down at his intertwined fingers.
"So?" Katie pulled her hair behind her ear.
"Are you gonna tell me your story?"
"What story?"
"The one you said was too long to tell me about on the swing set."
"Oh..that one." Katie broke their eye contact to look at the half eaten nachos between them. Katie relaxed in her seat and reclined it, staring up at the roof of his car. "Okay, so for the past 5 years I've been living in Oahu. Which is an island in Hawaii if you didn't know. And-"
"First of all, I'm not that stupid, I knew Oahu was in Hawaii. And second, are you serious? Hawaii? That must have been amazing! Why'd you come back?" Brennen interrupted, practically jumping out of his seat.
"That's what I was getting to. If you would let me finish. Well anyway, like I said, I've been living in Hawaii and it wasn't really too good for me. When I had to leave Cali and all of my friends and family, it really took a toll on me. I had no one, really. I didn't know anyone on the island except for my dad and a few of his family members. 8th grade through my senior year was rough. I didn't make any friends at all. The only time I talked to people from school was when I had a group project or something. People liked me, I guess. But I never really clicked with any of them like I click with Sara or James or Gianna. They were just too different from me. So for a while it went like that. Wake up, school, come home, Skype my boyfriend Tony, do homework, go to bed and start it all over again. That happened for 5 years. What a life, am I right? Well anyway, I always saw my friends having so much fun back home. The power of the Internet. And I always thought about everything I was missing. I missed middle school grad, the semi-formal, freshman year, prom, all of it. I didn't get to experience any of those things with my friends and it really hurt me, I guess you could say. And then on top of that, there's my boyfriend, or ex-boyfriend, Tony. He's from here, so we did long distance for 5 years. Impressed? Don't be. Because a few months back he told me he's been cheating on me. And no, I'm obviously not surprised because I mean, not being able to see your girlfriend for 5 years? It's gotta be rough. But the thing that surprised me was the fact that he's been cheating on me with the one girl I've ever hated. Diamond. Yes, her name is Diamond. She's always come across slutty to me and I know that sounds super judgmental but now I have evidence. He started seeing her a month before I left and never stopped since. Before I left. It's disgusting. I kissed his lips. The lips that have been all over her body. It makes me sick.." Tears blurred Katie's vision, but she blinked them away. Not tonight.
"Oh. " Brennen never broke eye contact. "I'm sorry. "
"It's not your fault. Don't worry about it, I'm fine now."
Brennen looked out of his window, paused, then looked back. "Do you wanna go somewhere?"
"Where?"
"Come on." Brennen motioned for me to follow with some huge smirk painted on his lips. Confused, Katie followed.
Behind the church there was a tall building. Tall being a huge understatement. The building was probably 40 maybe 50 stories high. When we got to the back of the building, Brennen pulled me behind a few dumpsters and shushed me.
