"What the fuck?" Katie whisper-screamed at Brennen after a big-looking guy with a beer belly and a flashlight had passed by them.
"Sh. Just follow me. It'll be fun, I promise." He said before making sure the coast was clear.
"And I should trust you because...? I mean I literally just met you this morning so I really don't know wh-" Brennen leaped up from his position and began a small jog to another set of dumpsters clung to the side of the building. Katie sat where she was for a minute debating if she should take her chance to escape from this lunatic right now, or if, maybe, Brennen wasn't a lunatic at all. She weighed her options and decided she had nothing left to lose. Adventures sound better than what she would probably be doing right now if she wasn't with Brennen.
Katie skipped over to where he was already waiting for her.
"Knew you'd change your mind." I'd love to slap that stupid smirk that's always on his stupid face. He held out his hands in front of him, clasped together. He bent down so his joined hands were by her knees. She looked at him and he nodded his head towards the building. Assuming he wanted her to get on top of the dumpster, she placed the bottom of her platforms in his palms and pulled herself up on the dumpster. For some reason he had no trouble getting himself on top. He reached for the bottom of a fire escape and wiggled his body over the edge of it. "Coming?"
Katie looked at the fire escape. The edge was definitely too high for her to reach. She rolled her eyes up at him and jumped for the bars. He helped pull her over and they stood on the fire escape together. "What exactly is it that we're doing? We're not breaking into an apartment, are we?" Katie joked, hoping that a joke was all it actually was.
"Of course not. How awful of a person do you perceive me to be?" He played an exaggerated surprised look on his face. "Good things come to those who wait." Then he ran up the next flight of stairs, grabbing Katie's hand as he went. The fire escape creaked and groaned, but Katie and Brennen didn't seem to notice or care. As they got farther and farther from the ground, Katie's heart began to flutter in worry and fear. What am I doing? I barely know this boy and I'm trusting him to bring me this high? What if it breaks? What if we fall? What if, what if, what if..
"Close your eyes." Brennen stood before Katie. She decided it probably wouldn't be a good idea to close her eyes this high off the ground on a creaky fire escape with a boy she doesn't even know, but she found herself giving in to his soft gaze and closed her eyes anyway.
He kept his hand in hers and his other hand on the small of her back. They walked over the edge of the building and jumped down onto the roof. Everything seemed a lot scarier with her eyes closed, Katie noticed. Their walking came to an abrupt end and Katie felt Brennen remove both of his hands. "Okay, you can open them now."
Wow. Katie had never seen the city from this point of view. It was actually really beautiful. For a city that she's known for quite a while, you'd think that she'd know every place in it. The lights from the buildings, cars, and the street lights lit up everything with an iridescent glow. The dark of the 9:00 sky painted shadows along the skyline. The moon releasing rays of blue-ish white into the sparkling darkness. It really was a sight to see.
"I know."
"What?" Katie shot a confused look at Brennen. He just looked out at the sleepless city.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Katie didn't respond. She didn't need to. Brennen knew what she was thinking. It was absolutely gorgeous.
