And just like that his new life began. He opened his eyes, blinded by the light. Yet the light was comforting in a way. It let him know he existed, that he was alive.
As he lay there on the ground, his other senses started to return to him. He could feel the cold ground beneath him, he could smell the crisp fresh air, he could hear the breeze as it rolled over him, he could taste the dust from the floor as he took in steady breaths.
He tried to get up as his eyes slowly adjusted to the morning sun, but his body was too weak and failed him. He blinked a few times, grunting with effort.
He turned his head to the right, squinting.
He was met by more dusty road, rubble and rocks covering the majority of the tarmac. But far off he could see something. A building, a half finished building.
No it wasn't half finished, it had been blown to pieces.
His eyes widened in shock, head turning the other way quickly. But all he could see was destruction. It seemed he had awoken in the ashes of a battle field. The old buildings that surrounded him were all in some way effected by the carnage, crumbling away as he lay there.
I have to get up.
I have to.He didn't know what drove the need to stand. But it was vital, like the dusty oxygen entering his system.
It took him at least three tries just to sit upright on his knees. It was as if something weighed him down. Confused, he looked at his back and found the source to his problem.
A large, slightly heavy backpack was clipped to him, covered in muck and grime from his various failed attempts to stand. With shaking hands, he unclasped the bag from his chest, wincing as it hit the ground with a hard thump.
