This story is for belle-of-the-ball-xo , for watching Pocahontas with me and letting me use her computer so I could fix my Google Docs because mine had a virus. I love you you moist packet of duck sauce.
"Hurry up and open it."
I smiled at her and tore back the wrapping paper covering the small box.
I saw the glasses case and was almost positive I knew what was inside. I opened it very slowly and saw the gorgeous pair of Ray Ban's staring not back at me, the evening light glinting off their shiny lenses.
"Natalie!" I threw my arms around my best friend's neck, almost knocking her over. "I can't believe it!" I turned my attention back to the sun glasses, overflowing with excitement. "How did you..."
"I had been saving up for a hoverboard but since they've been spontaneously exploding, I decided a more nonflammable gift for my best friend would be better."
"You gave up a hoverboard for me?"
"Pssh," She wiped sand off her shorts. "only because it was a safety issue."
I smiled at her. She was too humble for her own good. "Thank you so, so much."
"Any time.... That I have money."
We both laughed, helping each other up off the bank we always came to since we were kids. This was the spot we met. A few years ago, we had both been scouring the stream for crawfish and got in a catfight over who got to keep the one we both found at the same time. Needless to say, it swam away and we found ourselves yelling at the sky for its disappearance instead of each other and we had been friends ever since.
I crawled back into my kayak, Natalie not far behind. I rested the Ray Ban's on the bridge of my nose, the bright sunset being dimmed by their tint.
"If you drop those in the water, I might just bite your fingers off."
I snorted and start rowing, well ahead of Natalie before she had time to get in her boat.
"Slow down, will you?"
I laugh and paddle even faster, getting caught in a strong current that surged me forward.
"Ugh! I hate you. If my dad sees you get home without a trace of me, he's going to assume you dumped me in the river."
"Calm down, Natalie, I'm not going that fast."
I listened to her labored breaths as she pushed forward in the kayak, getting caught in the current with me.
I rested my paddles on the sides of my kayak and sat back, letting the current carrying me along as I admired the setting sun.
"I almost forgot how beautiful it was out here." Natalie sighed.
I nodded in agreement. Our land was beautiful, no wonder it was a popular vacation spot.
I closed my eyes and leaned my head back, letting the last rays of sun for the day shine over my face, my hair dipping into the water behind me.
"Summer is over." Natalie sighed. "Along with my life."
I laughed and opened my eyes. "It won't turn cold for a while, we can still come out here."
"I know, but it's not the same when you're thinking about tests and drama and all that, it just ruins it."
I nodded. She was right. Even the smallest things could ruin this.
"Well," I picked up my oars. "we should be getting back. My dad is making a huge birthday dinner for me."
The current made it an easy ride back, leaving me to savor the balmly air, vibrant colors, and sweet aromas around me.
