The only thing in my peripheral were bursting shades of blue and green melting into one. After ten idyllic minutes of riding along the cobbled streets, the seamless view ahead was all that mattered. I had already mastered the Segway. However this was not the case with my mum, who was slowly lagging behind after numerous sudden halts when so much as a bird flew by. The bulky machine, unknown to so many, had the ability to rid you of all your worries. As I effortlessly rode down the humid streets of Cyprus, only the light breeze prevented me from collapsing with the heat, though this didn't stop me.
When travelling to a new place with five people, there are always so many different things that want to be done and so little time. Riding a Segway however, was one of the few things we all agreed on. I think it's safe to say that even my dad would rather ride through town on the manly looking contraption, then go to one of the many jewellery stores my mum managed to scope out and find, no matter how hard. So I think you could say our prayers were answered when a flyer for the "Paphos Segway Tour" simply fell in our lap while taking a rest on one of the scorching benches outside a small souvenir shop.
The City of Paphos is described as an 'open-air museum'. Enriched with history and stories hiding behind every street corner, it's a wonder we were able to get through any of it in just two short weeks. Though this is where the fascinating, two hour Segway tour, came into play. From the Medieval Fort of Paphos, to the Ancient Theatre, all the way to the church of Panayia Theoskepasti built on top of a rock. We saw it all. To experience such an array of rich culture, in just a short amount of time, can only be done in the most exhilarating way through a Segway tour. Narrow Street? No worries, the Segway will zip straight through. Strapped for time? The Segway will get you there in two minutes flat, all while looking fabulous doing so with the windswept look attractive to so many.
However all is not as it seems, we went through intense training before we had the privilege of boarding a Segway. Riding along a lengthy paved street, as well as up and down a daunting ramp for around ten minutes each. Intense right? Even though I nearly 'died' when I had to ride to the end of the street and stop in front of the guide just in time and nearly didn't, all was well. My mum unfortunately didn't overcome her worries so early on. The words "Come on Rita my darling" from our effervescent Cypriot guide was heard so many times it had become a personal ringtone.
The experience we all shared was definitely worth it, and I would honestly recommend it to anyone. As looking on eBay as we tiredly wandered away from where we dropped them off, for the cheapest Segway to buy, can't be too bad can it?
