I walked down the hall of my new school with a feeling of dread. This place is huge compared to my middle school, and I don't know a single person. This is only the first day and I've already been shoved, yelled at, and tripped down the stairs. I never understood why I was always the one being picked on; maybe it's because everyone else knew each other, and I am a stuffed toy thrown to vicious dogs.
I just moved here over the summer from Page, a very small town. And now I'm in San Diego, a very large one. I don't fit in in the slightest.
I barely make it to my first hour seconds before the bell rings, the teacher looks iritated and tells me to take a seat. The class goes by slowly, as all we do is go over the sylibus, but I blank most of it out anyway.
Most of my day goes by without incident, that is, until it was time for lunch. I walked into the mostly empty library to look for a place to hide until lunch was over. I saw an unoccupied corner and took a seat, examining my surroundings.
Sitting alone at a table in front of me was a girl with dark skin and curly hair. She seemed to be focused on a book for what looks to be her history class. A couple of tables to her left, I noticed another person sitting alone. This time, a guy, with dark hair and fair complexion. And another few tables behind him was a very tall guy playing solitaire with some cards. Is this where all the lonely people go for lunch? The four of us are the only people in the library besides a couple of teachers.I look between all of them when the girl stopped looking into her book and spoke to me,
"What are you looking at?" She snorted. She didn't seem to have a concept of quiet since she caught the attention of both of the other boys who were now looking at me as well. The air around me was tense, and I struggled to breathe.
"Well?" The girl pushed, "What's your problem, red head?"
The tall man that was originally playing solitaire stood up and walked towards us. The other guy followed.
"Hey," the tall boy said, "let's calm down here, everything is alright."
The other boy with dark hair kneeled down in front of me,
"You look a little shaken," He says in a smooth voice, "are you alright?"I nod my head in response as a teacher walks over to us.
"Is there a problem here?" The teacher asks in a pretentious manner, "Do I need to call the office?""No, no," the guy in front of me stands up, "everything's all right here, we're all..." he hesitates, "friends."
The teacher mutters something in return and walks off. The guy before me helps me up,
"I'm Jorge, by the way." He speaks, "And you are?"I swallow the lump in my throat, "Valerie. I'm Valerie."
He takes my hand and guides me to the table where the other guy and the girl are sitting.
"Let's figure this out, shall we?" He whispers in my ear.We both sit down at the table and exchange glances between the other two in front of us. The silence is unbearable.
"So," Jorge begins, "I'm Jorge, and this is Valerie, and we're both kinda curious as to why you decided to start a scene?"
The girl looked like she was going to jump over the table and strangle Jorge next to me.
"She," The girl snarled, "was staring at me."Jorge and I exchanged a look. Was this girl serious?
"You know what?" The other guy began to talk, "Let's just forget about this, okay? I'm Colin, and this is Melena. It's nice to meet you guys."
As soon as Colin had finished talking, the bell had rung, signifying the end of lunch. I grabbed my things, and about ran out of there as fast as I could. I didn't want to be there anymore. I was almost to my next class when Jorge had caught up to me.
"Hey, Valerie, I could tell that whole situation back there was really uncomfortable for you. Sorry you had to deal with that; that girl is insane."
Before I had chance to respond, Jorge mumbled a quick, "gotta go," and disappeared into the crowd. Meeting any of those people today; I never thought any of them would change my life.
