I roll over in bed and look at the clock, 1 AM. I internally groan and get up to use the bathroom quietly. I glance around at the others staying in the hotel room with me; they are all fast asleep. I decide to tip toe to my suitcase and rummage for a comfy shirt, running shorts, and socks. I then head to the bathroom and throw on the clothing,. I put on my tennis shoes and slip out of the hotel room. The bright lights from the hotel momentarily blind me, so I lean against the door to let my eyes adjust.
Once I regain energy and can see, I wander down to the hotel lobby. It is quiet aside from a few teenage girls of about 14 who are sitting in the reception area chatting excitedly about the rest of the day. I find a map of the hotel and run my finger over all the activity rooms until it lands on the Fitness Center. I figure out it is on the next floor down and head back to the elevator. The elevator door opens to a hallway that is completely deserted. I continue down the hall and find the Fitness Center. I slide my key card and head into the room. No one is in here, perfect. I switch on the lights and head over to a treadmill in the corner of the room.
Somewhere during mile 3, I sense that someone has entered the room. I take a quick glance at the figure and can make out that it's a guy of about 6 feet tall in a black shirt. I end up doing two more miles and then a 15 minute cool down. I check the time, 2;23. Snagging a towel off the rack on the way out, I glance at the same guy from earlier, who goes to the gym at 2 AM? I snicker to myself because, well, I am here too, but it was a good escape from the cramped hotel room.
I suddenly hear someone shout, "What are you staring at?", and I realize I'd been staring at the guy. His voice was extremely rough, and he didn't sound like someone I should mess with.
"Nothing! Sorry!" I exclaim and run out of the Fitness Center.
I quickly decide to head to the Starbucks in the lobby because a hot tea was in order. The elevator took forever to get here, but when it did, I couldn't believe who was in front of me, Niki and Sammy Albon. My brain stopped functioning, and I couldn't do much but stare. I didn't move out of their way until Niki cleared his throat, which shook me out of my momentary daze. Awkwardly, I stepped out of their way to allow them to exit the elevator, and I rushed in pushing the close button repetitively. Well, I was most definitely not ready to see any content creators this early.
"Good Morning, I'll take a tall hot tea with two scoops of sugar and a tiny amount of cream please!" I say a little too enthusiastic, a good workout always puts me in a great mood.
"That will be $1.75 please," the Starbucks worker says.
I extend my phone forward with the electronic payment scanner showing.
"We don't accept gift cards via the Starbucks app," the Starbucks worker explains.
"Ma'am I used my Starbucks app here last year," I explain to the Starbucks worker.
"As far as I know, we have never accepted payments via the Starbucks app," she explains to me.
"Oh, okay." I say defeated, "Sorry to be a bother."
I decide to take a seat in the far corner of the mini Starbucks. I lay my head on the table and think about my first encounter with Niki and Sammy. Good job Brooke, I'm such a ditz. They will probably remember me as the crazy lady who wouldn't let them leave the elevator. I unbury my head in my arms to see a hand setting down a cup of hot tea in front of me. I look up at the person setting it down. I would have never expected the hand to belong to a attractive guy, who I didn't see working the counter earlier.
"I really can't take this, it's my fault I wasn't prepared to pay," I quickly explain.
"Hey, it costs like $2.00, it's fine." He says with a gentle smile, "My name is Josh."
"It's nice to meet you Josh, my name's Brooke." I say satisfied, "Thank you for the drink."
"It's not a problem, I hope to see you by here again?" He asks.
"I'll be here until Sunday," I explain, "I'll bring money next time."
"If not, I've got you," he winks and walks back behind the counter.
It's only 3 AM, and today's already been a hectic day. I grab my tea off the table and decide to walk around the convention center part of the hotel. There is no one in this area of the hotel, and it is kind of spooky. In just a few hours, this place will be packed of excited tweens, teenagers, and young adults. I head out to the pool, all the lights are dark, and the lifeguard posts are deserted. I kick my shoes off and sit on the edge of the pool with my feet in the water. I sip my tea and close my eyes. It's so serene. After a few minutes, I find myself completely soaked by a large splash.
The splash is followed by a, " God Dammit Chai."
I'm startled by the sudden splash, but I am even more startled with the sudden appearance of Chai Cameron.
"OH! Well, er- Hi there, I apologize for splashing you," Chai stammers.
All I can reply with is, "Hi."
Well, this is definitely not one of the ways I imagined meeting Chai. I dreamed of every possible scenario but not this one. I would have never guessed I'd meet him without much of a crowd, but here he is, swimming right in front of me, but he is alone.
