As Taylor walked through the unblemished wooden door of his home, and flicked on the bright light as only a dull lamp was on, he had a huge grin plastered onto his face. He had just been with Destery, his 3 year running girlfriend whom he loved with his whole heart. But as he walked through to the living room, he never expected to see what he did. He let out a small gasp at the sight, his mother was lying on the couch and was underneath a man, all he could see of the man was that he was wearing a very polished and extremely expensive looking suit, and he had thick black hair with flecks of grey in it. Taylor coughed quietly to alert his mother that he was home, in case they were planning on going further than just kissing, at that thought Taylor grimaced and widened his eyes. His mothers head snapped up from the edge of the couch and she muttered something completely unrecognisable. The man turned his head the other direction, pretending as though he was interested in the fireplace or something else, as long as it wasn’t Taylor.
“You know, if you’re going to be making out in my house, with my mother, it would be great if you could actually look me in the eye” Taylor chuckled sarcastically, but he wished he hadn’t said anything. As the man slowly turned his head, Taylor’s eyes became wider and wider, “M…Mr Evans?” Evans was Destery’s last name, and this man was her Father. Questions spun through his mind in a whirlwind, but considering he had just seen them kissing with his own eyes, they were better left unanswered. He glared at both adults and turned swiftly on his heel, speed-walking to his car. He had to tell Destery, she would be so hurt if he kept this from her, and he loved her, he would never hurt her on purpose.
Suddenly a strong hand gripped his shoulder and spun him round, he was now face-to-face with Mr Evans, otherwise known as Richard, or as he liked to be known by, Rich. Taylor shrugged his hand off his shoulder but didn’t step away, instead he gave Rich a cold glare.
“Where are you planning on going, may I ask?” asked Richard, he had an amused expression on his face as he looked at Taylor. He had his brown leather briefcase swinging gently in his left hand, although his grip was firm and hard. He looked back at the door to Jeanne, Taylor’s mother, and gave a little nod. Taylor narrowed his eyes at that and turned around to his car again.
“I’m going to see your daughter, Mr Evans, because personally, I’m not enjoying finding out what’s going on. Also, considering you already have a wife, I’d like to let her into your little secret to!” with that he spun around and threw open his car door with a quiet huff, as he got into the drivers seat. As he turned on the engine, he noticed the passenger side opening, and Richard getting into the seat. He looked at Taylor with an intense expression, he was weighing something out in his mind, it was quite obvious to Taylor that he was thinking something through. Maybe a lie? An excuse? He muttered his daughters name then looked at Taylor’s phone, which was now flashing brightly, showing a picture of Destery as a text from her came through.
“If you told her she would hate you, she would blame this all on you, you know she’s quick to react” suddenly Richard had a mischievous twinkle in his eyes, he continued his monologue about Destery, talking for 28 solid minutes about how she deserved better, and would be better off not knowing about this, same with his wife, Mariella. He said they would both prefer being kept in the dark for now, and in the long run they would be thankful for it, and that he would tell them, let them down gently, and then leave them for Jeanne. Taylor stayed quiet throughout the whole speech, seconds later, he pressed the call button on Destery in contacts, and waited as it rung through the speaker. He was speechless by the time she picked up, her voice came through the phone and he took a deep breath.
“I’m sorry to do this over the phone” he started, “but, well I’ve met someone else, I’m sorry but we’re done” he gulped back a lump in his throat and his eyes began to well up as he clicked the red ‘end call’ button on his touch-screen. What he had said to her was a complete lie, he had not met someone else, and he did not want to. He had lied to her, because he knew Rich was right about telling Destery, how could he stay with her and feel guilt every time he saw her? He would be living a lie. So instead he thought it would be best to break it off, pretend he knew nothing, and stay away from her. No matter how much it hurt. It would hurt more telling her his father was planning on leaving her and her mother for his mother, it was wrong, and Taylor just couldn’t and wouldn’t do it. As he gripped tightly onto his phone, he ignored the bleeps and rings as Destery tried to call and text him, he had tears in his eyes and he threw his phone across the street, biting down hard on his upper lip as it crackled into thousands of pieces. He could never speak to her again, it would be to hard, much to hard.
So with that, he turned slowly and walked into his house, his mother was out of sight. He ran up the set of carpeted stairs, and into his room. He dived into his bed and covered his face with his pillow as tears pricked in his eyes. He continued to cry until sleep engulfed him into the cold night, that evening, he dreamt of Destery.
