The note had arrived, bearing the words:

During sunset on the eve of the twenty-fifth of July, no man, woman, or child shall set their eyes towards the west, or the worst will come upon us.

So it was, shutters drawn, that the people buried themselves under layers of blankets for fear that they might glance upon the west.

One small boy, anxious and impatient, tugged on his mother's sleeve. "Mommy, can I look out yet?" Without waiting to hear her reply, he stuck his head through the hole in the blanket and peeked through his hands out the window.

As such the world was destroyed.
