Chapter 1: Fanfic

I sat on top of the hill, the soft autumn breeze blowing through my auburn hair. The clouds above were puffy and picture perfect as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a wonderful glow around me. The wild grasses danced around, taking on playful personalities as they bent and shimmied in the wind.

I lay back, smiling to myself because things could not be more perfect.

Boy, was I wrong.

"Katrina Belle!"

I snapped upright and looked wildly around for the owner of the voice, already dreading who it was. I sighed as my eyes rested on the beholder. Bird-like nose, short neck, beady eyes. It could only be -

"Sister Marina! What are you doing here?" I asked the short-tempered nun, receiving a furious look from her and sending an annoyed one in return.

"Getting you, Miss Belle. What do you think you're doing out here, missing your classes!? I'm going to have a stern talk with your mother!" The sister feuded. At the mention of my mother, I stiffened. She smiled at that, not a sympathetic one but a creepy one I couldn't place. Shivers ran up and down my spine and I swallowed hard.

"I don't have a mother, *Sister* Marina," I said, venom stinging my tone "I think you would know that by now."

She narrowed her eyes at my words and I glared right back.

"I'm going to go have to tell Reverend Ford about this little 'expedition' and I've decided to invite you to come with me." Sister said and I grimaced. Ha, 'invite'? Yeah right, if I didn't come with her, she'd probably grow claws and fangs and then kill me on the spot.

She began to walk away, holding her head high and back straight like all the wardens do. That's what I call them because this stupid covenant is as good as a jail anyway. Watching you, guarding you, not letting you leave. Not like I'd have anywhere to go anyway.

I sighed and got up to follow the Sister. I took one last longing glance at the beautiful sunset and follow her. Turned out this afternoon wasn't so great after all.

"Keep up!" Sister Marina snapped from the bottom of the hill and, startled, I jumped up. I glumly walked down the hill, dragging my feet in the tall grass, wishing I was anywhere but here. Almost instantly a voice spoke back: Just hold on. You're almost through. I stopped at the bottom of the hill and stared wildly around. Sister Marina stopped and looked back, noticing I wasn't walking. Her scowl deepened at me.

"Karina! What are you waiting for?!" She demanded, putting her hands on her hips.

My mind raced so fast I almost didn't hear her.

"U-um n-nothing, Sister." I stammered and forced myself to keep walking, though my mind was somewhere else.

What was that? Who was that? I kept thinking as I stumbled towards Sister Marina. I had no answers except that I was positive I wasn't the one who thought that. And the sister didn't hear it so it had to have been in my head... I thought, biting my lip. But maybe she did and was pretending not to...

The more I thought about it, the more it hurt so I pushed the whole event from my mind. Instead, I thought about the beautiful sunset I had watched, and pretended I was still up on that hill, watching the stars come out and hearing the crickets chirping. I wished to be there with all of my entire being. But yet, I wasn't.

"Hello Miss Belle."

I snapped back into reality and realize where I was standing. Oh, great. Reverend Ford's office. I made a face and slumped down into one of the hard plastic chairs in front of his desk.

"Hi." I said flatly and his lips tightened. The reverend is a tall thin man in his mid-forties that has a love for enforcing rules extra tough. Just my type of person. Not.

"Sister Marina," he said, tilting his head slightly towards her to address her but keeps his icy eyes on me "would you please explain the manor of Miss Belle's outbreak here?"

"Of course," she said with an unsettling glint in her eye. "I found her outside on the far hill all the way from the main building! And the worst part is... I caught her with a cigarette!"

"WHAT?" I cried and sprung to my feet. Reverend Ford's mouth drops open and sits there gaping at me. My face flushes angrily. I can't believe that that the Sister would lie like that, and right to my face!

"Katrina Belle! You know perfectly well smoking is prohibited! There will be serious consequences for this!" the Reverend yelled and all at once it comes to me. Why didn't I think of this earlier?

"No." I said, calmly looking the red-faced Reverend straight in the eyes. "There actually won't be any consequences, because there will be no one to inflict them on. Have a nice day!" then I walk out of the door and then it fully sinks in.

I'm free.
