The Return

NICK FURY'S knuckles hit the door of the apartment loudly, before stepping back and waiting for it to open. Diana Prince opened the door of her home to find a familiar man with an eye-patch, layered in black leather. Her hair was a mess and a lace robe was wrapped around her body for warmth and security.

It was four in the morning in New York, which explained why Diana felt so uneasy. However, once she saw the expression on Nick Fury's face, she knew whatever he was there for was of urgency.

"Nick? What happened?" Diana's raspy voice rang through Fury's ears, showing she had been in a deep sleep. Fury sighed and said, "We found him."

Diana felt her heart stop beating as he spoke. Her eyes clouded with tears, while she brought a hand over her heart. Her voice trembled, "He–he's alive?"

Fury nodded, watching the Amazon's shocked expression. "He'll be here in the morning. We will be placing him in a protected facility until he wakes. He's alive, Diana."

Diana's mind flooded with every memory she had of him; her heart ached as it remembered every feeling she had felt for him. She thought she had lost him, but now he was alive.

Steve Rogers was alive.

Diana wrapped her arms tighter around her body and breathlessly asked, "After all this time?"

"After all this time," Fury repeated back to her. He then turned and motioned towards the S.H.I.E.L.D. vehicle in her driveway. "Pack your things, Prince. Let's go."

Diana rushed inside her home and quickly threw together a bag filled with enough clothes for a good week. Following after Fury, the two entered the car and the chauffeur drove them to the New York S.H.I.E.L.D. facility.

Diana patiently waited to arrive and drummed against her thigh in the same one-two-one rhythm, over and over again. Despite her relieved feelings for the situation, Diana also felt fear. Fear because Steve had been gone for almost seventy years. The world had changed so much since he was last in it. Diana simply didn't know how he would handle the new world. Especially since so many of their friends had long passed.

Feeling the car slowly come to a stop caused Diana to sit up and ask, "Are we here?"

Fury nodded, exiting and going to her side of the car and opening the door. Once they were out, they entered the base, which was in the middle of Times Square posing as a corporate building.
