As rain drizzled down the side of the building, Chaim stared blankly out of his bedroom window. On days like this, there was nothing to do around the house. Dad was out, Mom was cleaning out the attic for the 10th time that week, Grandpa had wandered out somewhere in the woods again, and Karen was digging through her junk closet for one of her "bored" games. Nothing interesting ever happened in Bethlehem, Georgia, except for an occasional joke about the nativity. All the channels on TV were set to the latest news about some crazy joke for a presidential candidate, Donald Trump. Even staring out the window started to get boring, but the rain continued to fall. What was with rain anyhow? It did what it wanted all the time with no care about the people around it. Why did it do this? Because it was free.Life wasn't always boring for Chaim. He used to be carefree, living as he wished. That is until the computer came into his life. The sunny days outdoors with his sister Karen turned into cloudy days of gaming and movies with his computer. Sometimes Karen thought that Chaim loved his computer than the rest of his family, more than the world, more than anything. Everyday after school he would use his computer for homework, then use it for entertainment, and then fall asleep in front of it accidentally. Their parents never stopped him from doing so. Even Grandpa found something to do without the two siblings. Everyone was always too busy. Everyone was too busy with life to pay attention to the little sister in the family. This is why she enjoyed power outages. Days where her brother didn't always stare at a screen all day long, because he couldn't.
Chaim frowned when he saw Karen finally decide on a board game to play. How he wished to go back to his computer and play League or possibly Warcraft. Life couldn't get any worse, quite literally. The Game of Life was going slowly, Karen couldn't decide what house to buy. Chaim dropped his head and sighed. What was a 16 year old trying to achieve by playing stupid board games with an 11 year old girl for a sister? His thoughts were interrupted when Karen mentioned that it was his turn. She had gone for the 2 story mansion.
There was a creak of mesh door that led to the backyard. The siblings knew that sound well. Grandpa was back. Karen immediately jumped up from the board game, knocking over a box full with inheritance and house cards. Chaim stood up, brushed himself off and then walked over to where Karen and Grandpa were. Chaim didn't mind the company of Grandpa, he was quiet, smart, and always on top of the latest trends. He was also mysterious, for once a month he would always walk into the woods for what he called a "hunting" trip. For some reason, Chaim felt that Grandpa wasn't hunting anything in the forest. He was to kind of a man to kill anything, and he never brought anything back. This always made Chaim wonder, what was he doing back there?
Towards the end of the day, the power came back, the rain stopped, Chaim was back at the computer, but Karen wasn't alone this time. Grandpa was there! She asked him to tell her a story. Grandpa smiled as he put down his newspaper, and leaned back in deep thought. At last he spoke, and what a wonderful tale he had spun! He told of a story where a young lad had been taken through a dimensional portal and found a land of people much different than he. They were all so weak, and looked at the lad as a sorcerer for his powers of telekinesis. It was all so new to him. He decided to stay with these people for a while, as he studied the new world around him. As weak as these people were, they had many interesting sciences, and he set forth to learn about them, all while forgetting about how to go home. At last, once he had studied his heart out, he saw that there was no clear way home. The dimensional portal had been shut down! There was no way home for the lad, who had now become a grown man. He tinkered his life away trying to find a way to reactivate the portal. One of the townsfolk watched him day after day, seeing how diligently the man worked on this portal. She one day gathered up the courage to meet him, being inspired by his dedication. They later on lived to get married, and having a son and a daughter, and later, two grandchildren, who live in this very house today.
