"$20 says Orb will hit us."
I stared at the kid.
Betting on if we're gonna die or not. Stupid. I mean, if the meteor did hit Earth, when the fuck would I pay him, and what would he do with the money? He'd be dead.
He stared back at me.
"You're shitting me." I said quietly, looking at him.
He shook his head, "$20 says we'll die."It was a pretty even chance.
"Fine." I said quietly.
The kid smiled and continued with his drawing. It was the same one he was doing yesterday, but today he was just covering it in black ink. "So," he said, glancing up at me, "why don't you ever do anything?"
I looked at him. I do stuff. In my own time. There's no point coming here and I can prove it by refusing to do anything all year and still getting good enough grades in my exams. "Because it's pointless."
He snorted. "It's not completely pointless."
"It is. I've done nothing all year and I'm still an A grade student."
The kid stared at me for a few seconds, "yeah? Well not everyone is just smart."
"I'm not 'just smart'" I argued, "I'm just proving how pointless school is."
"I'm guessing you're one of those people who will do literally anything to prove a point."
"I'm not!"
He looked at me, "you so are."
I looked at my hands, mumbling, "I'm not."
The kid laughed, "fine. Whatever, spaceboy."
"I do have an actual name."
"And I don't give a shit about your actual name." He said, dipping one finger in the pot of ink and taking it out, holding it over his already ink-drenched drawing, watching the black droplets splash on it.
I sighed, "for the record, it's Frank."
"I'm still gonna call you spaceboy."
"And I'm not gonna respond to that."
He laughed again, "fine. Fine, Frank, I'm Gerard. Nice to meet you."
I didn't reply. Instead, I picked up a paintbrush and started painting my hand with black ink.
---
Shrink looked at my hand, then at me, "why'd you do that?"
I shrugged.
Truth was, I was bored. I did it because I was bored. Is that illegal now? To be bored? To experience the feeling of boredom?
"There could be deeper psychological meanings behind you doing that." She said, looking at my hand again.
There are no fucking 'psychological meanings' behind my black fucking hand. I was bored.
"You know, it could represent other emotions."
Yeah? Well it doesn't. Bitch.
