The thunder of a moving truck sounded outside of the window of a two-story house. The blue eyes of a girl peered out of her bedroom window at the sound. Her facial expression turned from curiosity to a mixture of sadness and annoyance. She turned around and grabbed at her curtains to close them, but her hand swatted the empty air. Her hand swung down and hit her thigh lightly and she walked over to a maple wood brown dresser.

She pulled out a pair of straight-leg jeans and a plain dark red shirt which she dangled over her arm as she walked out of her room and into the bathroom across from the hallway. Her daily morning routine was very quick unlike most girls of her time. She pulled on her clothes, brushed her hair and teeth and then went down to breakfast before going outside or to school. Only today was different. She wasn't going to school, or even going outside for any special reason.

Just as she finished, a woman's voice rang from downstairs.

"Eelyse!" it called, and the girl rushed downstairs, her feet beating the staircase as she went. She walked into the kitchen, and saw the voice's owner pulling porcelain dishes out of the cupboards and shoving them into boxes after wrapping them carefully with newspaper.

"Have you finished packing?" the woman asked slowly, and still working her hands over her dishes.

"Yes, mom," came Eelyse's reply. Her voice almost cracked as she uttered those two words. She swept her auburn hair behind her shoulders. "Do you want me to bring them down?"

"That would be great, dear. I'm sure it would make it easier on the movers" She had stopped her long enough to show her a small smile. Eelyse forced a smile back and turned to jog back upstairs.

Almost all the way across the United States of America, new school, new friends and new surroundings. Why do we have to move so far? Were Eelyse's thoughts as she began carrying down her boxes. She would miss her friends more than anything else, but the thought of moving so far made her dizzy.

As she finished carrying her last box down, she noticed that the movers had already begun pulling things out of the house and onto the big truck outside of the house. She followed them outside and wandered a few yards away from them where she sat down to watch; her hands around her bent legs with her chin propped onto her knees. Though there were only two movers, they seemed to be able to work quite efficiently. They talked loudly to each other, and sometimes laughed. Eelyse couldn't tell what they were saying, but she was semi entertained for the time being.

Suddenly, a hand pushed her shoulder and Eelyse straightened out her legs to keep her balance. She turned half of her body around to see what had done this, and her eyes met another girl. She had dark brown hair that went down half of her back, and her bangs had just grown out along with it. It hung in a wavy pattern, and her eyes were hazel.

"Oh. Hello, Kay" She said to her best friend. They had known each other since the first grade, and she was hardest of all to leave.

"So...your last day, huh?" she asked. Her eyes analyzed the movers for a moment before falling back onto Eelyse.

"Yeah. Not looking forward to it," She turned her attention back to the movers to hide just how much the whole event was bothering her. Kay sat down in the grass next to Eelyse, but her gaze met the ground in front of her. The sat in silence which was slightly awkward since neither of them knew what to say.

"Come on," Kay demanded and she stood up, tugging on Eelyse's arm to help her up. Kay began walking down the street, and Eelyse followed close behind. She caught up, and asked

"Where are we going so suddenly?" Kay looked at her and smiled.

"Fenner Pond," Eelyse returned the smile, I was her favourite place to hand out. It was always beautiful there no matter what the season, but autumn there was her favourite. She was happy in remembering that it is autumn and that she would be able to see it in that state one last time. Better yet, it was only about a five minute walk from her house!

"Where are you moving to again? I forgot the city name," Kay asked.

"Cascade, Montana, also known as too far away!" She joked, trying to lighten the mood in spite of the circumstances."

"Man, it's going to take you an eternity to get there," She paused, thinking things over. "From Cranston, Rhode Island to Cascade, Montana," She huffed.

"I know. It's going to take days of my parents constantly switching off driving turns to get there. Even when they get off work, they still have to tire themselves."

"That reminds me, I saw your mom, but not your dad. Where is he?" She asked curiously.

"At work, picking up his last paycheck," Kay nodded, but their conversation hardly softened the depressing atmosphere.

Eelyse looked at a sign that was on the side of the path. It read Fenner Pond. Eelyse took a look beyond the sign and saw the pond's edge that was not occupied by anyone. The only movement was of the light reflecting off of the surface of the wind-blown water.
