We walk through the doors to the police, take a queue ticket and take a seat. There's just a couple of other people there, everyone reading the newspaper or doing something on their phones. It's dosen't take long before our number get called and we walk up to the desk.

"Hi, my name is Carrie Parker and I got a call a few days ago from a policeman telling me that my stepmom and stepdad had been killed in a car accident." I had been practicing the sentence over and over in my head so I could say it without my voice shaking. I glance over at Danny that stands next to me. He looks at me, and I realize that I never told him this much. Whatever, now he knows the basic stuff the easy way. I guess that's cool.

The lady behind the desk call a policeman and he follows me to a room where we can talk. When he asks who Danny is I just says that he is a friend of mine and that it's okay that he follows. We sit down on two chairs infront of a desk in a white room. The policeman sits down on the other side.

"So, you are Carrie Parker... I'm terribly sorry for the loss of your parents-"

"Stepparents" I correct him.

"Yes. From what I see you have allready lost your parents. We have a little bit of paperwork to do, but then we are going to send you to a new home as soon as possible. We have a couple of couples that wants to adopt so I'm going to call them to a meeting so you can meet and then will take you home as soon as possible. This will maby take two days, do you have anywhere to stay until that?"

"Yes, she is staying with me" Dannys says before I even get to open my mouth. I look over at him but he just looks straigh ahead. I am going to say that no, I'm not I've allready been taking up way to much time from you. That they'll pay for a hotelroom for two nights, but the thought of being alone stop me. Selfish, selfish, selfish.

"Okay then Carrie, I can take your number and I will call you when we got a time set for a meeting." I tell him my number and then we leave.

We get out and start walking. The morning air fills my lungs and I take a deep breath. Around us people rush to get to work and school, cars and buses are honking. So, I'm gonna stay like this for two more days. Then I'm gonna go to a new family and it will all start over.

"That was... Like can they even do it like that?"

I look over at Danny and see his upset eyes staring back at me.

"Do what?" I ask.

"That, just sign some papers and call a couple like, 'hey, we got ya a daughter now you wanna pick her up' I mean without any talking to you or asking you what you want?" He is really upset. I wonder why he cares. No offense but why dosen't he just go on with life and assume that I'm going to be happy and that I'll get over this? Why does he care?

"I guess, yeah. I mean, you can't really be picky. Glad they want a messy kid like me" I say in a try to make a joke. No laugh. He glance over at me.

"So what, when you lost your parents, they just did the same thing?"

"Pretty much, yeah. It was a couple of more things to do since they where my biological parents but yeah. Basiclly the same thing."

"Well, that's crazy. I mean you must have been devestated. No one to talk to or anything?"
