I woke up in the middle of the night hearing sounds coming from my bedroom. I was at my Mom's co-worker's house. She decided it would be a good idea to spend the night here earlier today. I saw no problem, for she left it up to me. They had video games, and that was a done deal. Also since we never went anywhere, I was excited to leave the house after so long. I didn't wanna get "tucked in" by a drunk mother who could barely speak, let alone stand up right. Then, I heard the co-worker's husband's voice loudly say,
"Just say it! You belong to me!"
What the heck? The voice was then followed by my Mother saying,
"No, I belong to her!"
She was referring to her co-worker, no doubt. I knew exactly what was going on, but I realized now that I thought wrong. I thought she was getting hurt. Not that she wanted it or had been doing things like that the entire time we were there. She then had the audacity to play the victim. I heard him say it again. I was trying to think of what I should do, it would be a little hard to leave because their stupid dog is at the door. But, with the amount of noise I could leave and go get help. I think back now and I'm angry that it took me so long, but I don't regret my decision. I eventually couldn't take it anymore. I knew my Mom had a knife in her purse downstairs as well as her phone. I have two options: One, to take the knife and phone and run and get help. I'd bring the knife because I don't wanna be a little boy all alone at night on Pottstown in only my Velcro Converse, purple pajama shorts and a large basketball shirt that I got from a guy named Kevin who I used to live with. Anyway, back on track. I can do that. Or, two, I can get the knife and go try to help my mom all by myself. Oh my God, what 11 year old thinks of that?! I can't handle a 23 year old man and a 21 year old woman who are 10 times bigger than me! Am I insane? I can barely handle the kids at school. I'll go with the first option. I open the bedroom door slowly and the dog immediately comes to me. I put him in the room quickly so I don't get caught. Oh God it's louder... 'Just shut up! SHUT UP!' Is the only thing going through my head, but I can't stay here. I have to help her. I begin to slowly go down the stairs. Thanks to my Converse, I'm not that loud. Once I reach the bottom of the stairs, I see my Mom's purse on the table. I speed over to it and get her gray Android phone and her red and black knife. I try the front door, it's locked. The back door isn't though. I run to the back of the apartment. Because of the broken pieces of floor tiles in the kitchen, I had to be careful not to make any extra noise. I'm not safe and I'm terrified. Tears started to come up. No, not yet. I slide the dirty glass door open and go outside. Then I shut it once I'm out to cover up my tracks. Not really like I need to worry all that much, they're all probably wasted. But the co-worker and husband seemed pretty cognitive. The fence is too high here and there is a wood one that's too pointy. But if I climb the electrical box, I can get over the small wood one with no problems. I then did as I planned and I could still hear them. I now have a large chain link fence to climb. I hide the knife in grass because I'll hurt myself if I fall with it. I guess I'm going to be on my own, but I slide the phone between a hole low to the ground first so it doesn't fall out of my pocket. I then get my foot steady and take the first step up. I still know nothing's back there, she needs help and so do you. I get to the top of the fence and my shirt snags and rips a hole at the bottom. It doesn't change much, it's like a dress on me anyway. I'm now in the alley behind the rows of houses. I grab the phone and I start to cry. I'm so sick of crying. That thought came through my mind, that's all I've been doing lately. I just want my big sister Leah and brother Bradley. But Bradley is on the Appalachian Trail and my mom won't let me see my sister. I hate her for that, but she's family and needs help. I go to the far corner of the alley way, it's fenced off and the yard behind the fence is the brightest one here. That's a good sign, right? Then the door opens and a Hispanic man with a beautiful black and white dog came out and I was still crying. I ran up to the fence.
"Hey! My Mom is in trouble! I need help! The people are hurting my mom!" He quickly ran over saying,
"Calm down, calm down little one, it'll be ok. Who are they?" He then lifted me over his fence and called his dog, bringing us both inside then he sits me on this stoop. He runs to the apartment they are in and then back where I am. He then takes Mom's phone and calls the police. He explains everything that's happened. Then a bunch of other people come out. There was a teenager, or a lady in her early twenties... I don't remember any of their names but she reminded me of Leah, so I liked her. There was also a college couple, a pregnant lady, and her husband who was a little older than twenty years old I think. The man who helped first came back with a Capri Sun and a small bag of Chips Ahoy. I said thanks and then the twenty year old asked me questions about school as everyone else was talking. I was really scared but she calmed me down and hugged me. Then the cops came. They were two men, I don't know there names but they brought me to the door and knocked on it. All three of them came out.
"Excuse me is this your son?"
My mom said "No." I was shocked.
"Mom?!"
The co-worker then realized it was me.
"Mason?"
My mom tried to pull me into the house, but the cops grabbed her and put her to the ground, putting handcuffs on her. I was sent over to the stoop again and the cop asked me if I knew anyone's phone number I could call and go and be with them. I thought of people I lived with. But they said no. I thought of Leah and they gave me her phone. I called, no answer. Then I texted her.
{Sissy, it's Nugget. Please pick up. I'm in trouble and with the cops.}
It took a minute but she called back and one of the cops took the phone and talked to her and gave her his number. We were going to the station so that Leah and my stepmother could pick me up. The people said goodbye and I hugged the man who I met in the beginning. I went to my Mom and gave her the phone.
"Why did you do this?! Why did you do this...?" She asked me, crying. I didn't answer, I just went with the cops and got in the car. The car ride was quiet. The cops tried to make conversation but eventually understood that I didn't want to talk. Once we got there, the cop got a call. It was from Leah. Apparently my Mom was trying to trick her into thinking it was different and that she had me, but the cop explained everything to her and that she needed to come and get me. We sat down on a bench in the station and he gave me a soda. I put it in my backpack that they got out of the house when I was on the stoop. He told me we should go outside and see my sister and stepmother. I saw her and immediately started to run to her. We hugged, then went to the front of the station and my stepmother was talking to the cop and I was talking to Leah. I pulled my DS out of my backpack and showed her my Pokémon. The cop then turned to me and said,
"Who do you want to live with?"
"My dad."
"Ok." He said as he wrote something down. I sat on Leah's lap and almost fell asleep.
"Alright guys, let's go home." My stepmother said. We nodded and started to walk to a black truck. Once we got inside, I laid my head on Leah's lap and fell asleep.[Author's Note]
This all actually happened to me. All I changed was the Main character's name/pronouns. But other than that, it's a true story.
